How to Save Money at Redstone Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Redstone has been our vet for almost 9 years and we wouldn’t go anywhere else! The staff is warm and friendly and greeted our dog with such enthusiasm…our dog loved going to the vet! We were always able to get an appointment quickly and felt supported through all our decisions (from surgery to acupuncture). We recently had to say goodbye to our sweet boy, and the staff was amazing. They gave us the extra time, attention, and love during this difficult time. We look forward to bringing a new member of our family to Redstone…

Dr. Dustin Devine did a fantastic job 'rebuilding' our dog Gypsy's knee back in February. Couldn't be happier with the staff at Redstone and Kelsey in particular helped ease our anxiety about the surgery. They have taken care of Gypsy since we first rescued her as a pup and appreciate their fine care for her. Highly recommend Redstone and My Pet's Place for daycare and boarding as well. Keep doing what you do!

We have been coming there for the last 10 years for care for our pup Cody Stevenson. His Doctor was Dr. Laura Downie since we first came there in 2013 when Cody was just a few months old. From the get go Dr. Downie was so Fantastic with us and Cody! We ended up needing Hernia surgery for Cody which Dr. Downie took care of and there were many more visits related to his zinc responsive dermatosis and many other things. Cody was a handful! Over the years the staff there and all the Doctors and nurses were just so wonderful to us and Cody. Such love and care! Last week, 7/17/2023 Cody was very sick for a couple days, not eating or drinking. On Wednesday 7/19/2023 we knew we need to get him seen and the staff there so helpfully accommodated us with a Triage visit that afternoon. Doctor Kari Davis took care of Cody that day. His blood work came back in bad shape and we knew he only had a few days left if that so we as a family decided to help him out of his misery and Dr Davis gracefully told us she could accommodate us with this when we were ready. She was so kind and generous with how she handled this, giving us as much time as we needed that night. Me, my wife Jen and my 2 kids Jade and Jackson all went up there to be with him till the end. We kissed and cuddled him all the way through, it was really tough and heartbreaking. Dr. Davis made this process so easy and caring that we felt loved by by her and her staff that night during our very tough time.

I made an appointment for a dental cleaning for my six-year-old dog. I had received an estimate of the cost in September and it did say that the estimate expired in three months. Little did I know that the cost climbed from $527-$642 to about $750-$850. I had already dropped my dog off for the appointment when I found this out. I didn't think that the cost would increase that much in such a short amount of time. After speaking to Travis, the manager, I was told that the cost wouldn't be more than $644. Since my dog was already there, I agreed to the price even though I think it is exhorbitant. At the end of the day, they were supposed to call me to let me know my dog was ready to be picked up. They did not call. I will not be doing another dental cleaning there.

We have used Redstone for care for our pets for about 10 years. In that time, we have had numerous issues with the front desk staff. Rude people answering the phone, calls going unreturned, and difficulty refiling prescriptions. More recently, they gave me an appointment time and when I showed up they said I was late and the woman was angry and belittled me when I was stressed out about my sick dog. When I asked why they didn't call with a reminder and to confirm the time they said my account had been marked "do not contact." What?!?! We stuck with them because we always liked the doctors and they are located conveniently. However, a few weeks ago our dog developed mobility problems and we saw the doctor. After the visit she emailed with some information. A few days later (Thursday) I emailed back to let her know the medications were not working. I didn't hear back and our dog deteriorated rapidly. I called the clinic on Saturday morning and was told that our doctor wouldn't be in until Monday. I asked if one of the other doctors could call because we thought our dog needed to be put down. We never received a call back and had to make that horrible decision on our own. The vet that euthanized our dog notified Redstone and our doctor sent a condolence email saying she was sorry she hadn't been available. We'll be finding a new vet now.
