How to Save Money at Chatfield Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very knowledgeable doctor. Spent a good deal of time talking to us about our pup's luxating patella issue, including recommendations and possible joint supplements to help. We have had other pets treated at Chatfield, including an old family dog that we had to put to sleep. They are caring and compassionate. We've always been treated good, and have no complaints!

I wish there was an option for 10 stars. If the staff is reading this, I apologize it has taken me this long to write this thank you. I wanted to write it months ago, but the tears wouldn't allow me to. My husband and I moved out here 2 years ago with our 8 (at the time) year old Bernese Mountain Dog. For Lottie's first 8 years, we came from a very supportive vet network, so it was equally important for us to have that when moving here. We established care at Chatfield with Dr. Hirshan. Between normal routine care, allergies, biopsies, and ultimately a cancer diagnosis & saying goodbye....Dr. Hirshan (Dr. Naturman and Dr. Renehan throughout our 2 years were also incredible) and ALL of the staff have been nothing but incredible. Anyone that knows this breed, knows that it's tough. We got Lottie to age 10 in Feb. 23. Getting him to age 10, I credit in large part to this staff. I'm self admittedly a crazy dog mom, and the fact that this staff communicated with me the way they did, is a feat in itself (sorry again Maddie for my incessant emails). Saying goodbye to a fur baby, was incredibly awful. While it was the worst day of our lives, this staff made us feel supported and made an awful day as peaceful as they possibly could for us. Even after our loss, they continued to be supportive. Dr. Hirshan personally sent flowers, and her and Dr. Renehan sent a hand written sympathy note with an ink paw print of our sweet boy. We have been in awe with this hospital from start to finish. They have a client in us forever. Thank you all so much. Please look no further than Chatfield Veterinary Hospital.

We changed from our vet who we’d been seeing for over 10 years! We had the best 1st experience. My babies were so comfortable I was able to take this picture! We’re excited to have found them by 2 different recommendations.

Couldn’t be more grateful to everyone at Chatfield for their continued care of my dog, Isaac over the last few years! Isaac is in love with Hannah, the vet tech supervisor, and it makes me so happy because he is a large, anxious dog with a bite history, but that has never made Hannah or any of the other staff fearful of him or hesitant to care for him. He gets nothing but love all the time in their care. Big love both to Hannah & Dr Naturman, who have seen him literally 10 times over the last three weeks alone 😅

I won't get into details, but this isn't the place to take your pet for anything beyond a basic checkup. They severely screwed up treatment on our pet and strung out the recovery process into a small fortune. The front office manager was beyond flippant about it when we dared to ask any questions. Additionally the "medical director" was rude, arrogant, and tried to pass off their errors onto her staff rather than taking any responsibility. I can't imagine what it must be like to work for these people. This resulted in us having to seek medical treatment elsewhere. We went to another vet in the area and upon examining things, they said what Chatfield did was criminal and that they 100% failed our animal in what was otherwise a fairly routine treatment plan.
