How to Save Money at Littleton West Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This was my first visit to this hospital and I am very grateful for the recommendation. Dr. Anderson and Lea make a wonderful team. I feel like they really care about the animals. They are kind and professional. I am sure my dogs will get the best medical care when they need it. Thank you for great experience.

Just took our two dogs to their first appointment with this vet and it was a lovely experience! I have only ever taken our dogs to one other vet (who was totally fine, we just moved a bit too far away to keep going to them) but this vet appointment made me realize how much better the service could be! The vet and the tech spent so much more time with me and my dogs than I am used to at our original vet. They both talked through all the details of the wellness exam and their findings. Happy to have found this vet! As far as prices go, when compared to our original vet (also within the Denver area), it was no more than10% higher. I would gladly pay a little more to ensure my dogs are cared after well and to have a local spot that I trust. I hope the service continues to be at this high quality! Update -- Our pup sadly just had an emergency issue on a Sunday afternoon when their office was closed. We called and texted the number that they share on their automated message. One of the vets responded immediately and provided some guidance via text. We ended up taking our dog to the recommended emergency vet. The morning after, Little West Animal Hospital called me to check up on Aspen to see how she is doing! Really impressed with the attention and care from this vet office.

The prior Vet was great, THEN the new staff change happened and the place has gone to the tanker. The prices are high, the staff is extra ordinarily rude with even basic questions. They gave no concern about my dogs reaction to a vaccine even though her hip swelled up and then told me to bring her in again for another 200$. The vet was asked to change my dogs breed as it is not a BOXER it is a Whippet! But the doctor is so incapable of being able to tell a whippet from a BOXER she told me no. Even though that was placed on her vet documentations when she was only 8 weeks old [adopted from DDFL] and it is OBVIOUS shes a whippet. THEN she refused to acknowledge that my dog doesnt have a weight issue based on the fact "in her records it states shes a boxer." Yet NO time during her exam did the doctor ever state she had a weight issue, yet wouldnt provide verification after exam that she does not. If a Vet can not tell a breed of a dog while examining a dog they 100% should NOT be practicing veterinarian services on ANY dog. If a doctor will not provide written documentation AFTER an exam stating her findings in writing. She should NOT be practicing veterinarian services.

The staff at Littleton West Animal Hospital truly knows how to offer the highest quality of care and a positive experience to both clients and their patients. We began using this clinic early this year, and thus have done our services curbside which have all been exceptionally well handled. I'll be the first to admit I've got quite a high maintenance crew, but every question or concern I've had they've answered without missing a beat, especially Melanie and Tammi. The level of detail and accuracy within their work is consistently above and beyond from the receptionists, to techs, and up to the doctors. I've never once had to call back for something not being handled correctly the first time -- quite a feat amidst the stress they must be under adapting to Covid protocol. In terms of vets, we see and highly recommend Dr. Wilks but I have no doubt Dr. Reisig is every bit as helpful based on my experiences with the rest of the staff. As a client, I want to say how much I appreciate the detail and emphasis Dr. Wilks places on client education. It's never a case of "Here's your bloodwork, here's a prescription. We'll see you in four weeks." She takes the time to explain possible causes for ailments, treatment options, pros and cons, and helps you come up with the best possible treatment plan for your situation all while ensuring she's available for any questions that may arise during treatment. Finding a veterinarian that will consistently slow down and take the time to educate you as an owner is so hard to find, but she is truly outstanding in this area -- among many others. The genuine care every single staff member has for their job and their patients does not go unnoticed and reflects highly upon the clinic as well as its management. To give an example, they've sent me photos of my pets when we weren't able to be inside for their care and even mailed us back a cat toy we'd left while at an appointment. It's the little things that make the difference, and LWAH staff members go the extra mile every time. Littleton is so fortunate to have such a wonderful, caring, competent team of providers available to their pets. Even if you don't live in the surrounding area, this clinic is well worth the drive for your pet's health and your peace of mind.
