How to Save Money at VCA Santa Monica Main Street Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I just want to express my deepest gratitude to the doctors and staff at VCA. Their compassion towards my very sick dog touched my heart. Emma was especially empathetic to my situation. They helped me through a very heart-wrenching situation and it is something I will never forget. Please patronize this location if you want good care and empathy towards your furry loved ones.

I say this with ZERO hesitancy…THE VCA on Main is THE LITERAL BEST Veterinarian Clinic in LA. My wife and I have 3 Cats and we foster/rescue every three months. In total, we have rescued and adopted out 25 cats to their forever homes. The VCA Main staff has been beyond MAGNIFICENT!!! Knowledgeable, helpful, kind, compassionate…just the very best people. The Veterinarians are both professional and empathetic to a level we have NEVER experienced…even with boutique/concierge veterinarian services. Our praise for VCA Main could go on for pages BUT the greatest compliment I can bestow is that I absolutely and utterly TRUST them with our fuzzy babies without question!!!

Wow! We drove past three or four VCA locations to get to the main street location and I’m so glad that we did. They were able to see us same day when my dog had a UTI. They made special accommodations for my highly anxious dog, and saw us in a private room, not making us go through the lobby with other dogs and people. The doctor and the staff were so accommodating and so kind with my nervous pup. They were even sweet to my two kids who had to come with me due to summer break. We will continue to come to this location! I’m so grateful for Dr. Martinez and the team at the Main Street in VCA!

So excited this office has opened in our animal loving neighborhood! And even better the people that work here are beyond wonderful. All true animal lovers. My dog Charlie is a senior dog, nearly 17, when he needs care it’s generally right away. My first phone call I was greeted with so much warmth and they found time to see me later that day. I brought Charlie in and was welcomed by the kindest staff. I was a bit on edge because my pal wasn’t feeling well but they made me and him feel safe and cared for. We saw Dr. Martinez, who was so so kind and patient. I’ve never had a vet take time and ask questions like she did to make sure she had all the right information and that Charlie and myself were both comfortable. Charlie had an issue with one of his eyes, and was feeling quite sensitive so i am extra grateful for her patience. She was able to treat him that day with a follow up appointment a week later. His eye looked better the next day and she also gave me a medication for his arthritis which has worked wonders. In terms of price I felt they were comparable to other clinics in the area, but they have the bonus of an ultra kind, patient and more knowledgeable staff! I’m so grateful this clinic opened in the neighborhood! If you are a pet owner and are looking for a new vet or a place closer to home I highly recommend the VCA Santa Monica on Main Street. Your pet will thank you too!

I honestly didn’t expect such an amazing experience. They had availability the same day for me to bring my cat in. Everyone was so nice on the phone and in person, I can tell they are all animal lovers! The doctor listened to all of my concerns and was very friendly to me and my cat. She even followed up with me a few days later to see how my cat was doing. Strongly recommend them!
