How to Save Money at Modern Animal

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Fantastic Vet clinic! Staff is nice, professional and polite, appointment starts on time and the place is clean and animal friendly (they have so many treats for cats and dogs and ways to calm the pet when needed). Setting appointment with the App was easy and the membership that gives unlimited Dr. visits and 24/7 chat with a vet is awesome. Dr. DeVore was professional and attentive, wasn’t rushed to leave or make any decision, and all options of treatment (and if they are essential or not) were given in a patient and calm manner. Will come back with the rest of my cats for sure. Highly recommend!

We recently took our cat, to Modern Animal for a follow-up visit. She was diagnosed a couple of months ago with stage 3 kidney disease, and this appointment was meant to check whether her condition had improved with her new diet, as well as to monitor her blood pressure, since kidney issues can cause hypertension. During the initial routine exam, when the doctor checked her eyes, ears, teeth, and overall health, I was in the room and my cat was completely calm. However, when it was time to draw blood and take her blood pressure, the staff asked me to leave. My husband and I waited in the waiting room for two hours, only to be told that they couldn’t complete any of the tests because my cat was too stressed. Leaving her alone in the room for such a long time clearly made things worse. Even giving her anti-anxiety medication in the future won’t help if she’s left isolated again. At her previous visit at the Westwood location, my daughter stayed with her the entire time — petting her and softly singing — and the team there had no issue with it. They successfully completed all the tests, and my cat stayed calm throughout, without any medication. This follow-up visit was scheduled for Saturday, the only day I could come due to work, but unfortunately, the clinic seemed understaffed, and our two hours there were wasted. We left without any results and now have to reschedule. I really hope the team reconsiders their approach. Allowing pet parents to stay with their animals during stressful procedures can make a huge difference — not only for the pet’s comfort, but also for saving time, money, and unnecessary stress for everyone involved.

Dr.DeVore is THE BEST. She always makes my dog feel so comfortable and at ease. She also did his neutering procedure. All the techs are so sweet and also so good with my dog. He’s a sweetie pie, but can be wary of strangers. His tail is always wagging with all the staff. The office is always clean, and well as all the rooms. I highly recommend this place!

Ok the positives. Clear pricing, clean facility, easy apts, good communication on the app. Negatives. Upselling procedures and potential misdiagnosis. I’m 99% sure my dog had kennel cough, we took him in to get checked, were told it wasn’t kennel cough, were given meds for nausea and sent home. At no point were we told to separate him from other animals. A few weeks later, after likely exposing other dogs to this sickness through not being isolated, the cough still persisted and we went back. The vet this time was much more concerned. Saw the coughing, immediately suspected kennel cough. This vet was on it, I liked her. Enter the vet tech. They suggested a pcr which made sense, and then a chest xray, but noted that they would need to keep my dog for several hours to be able to do this due to scheduling. I thought about it for a while, it made me uncomfortable as 1) I have a nervous dog and the cough was worse when stressed, and 2)my dog could be contagious. They only backtracked on the 3 hour wait when I queried where he would be held and the proximity to other animals. The tech then embarked on a giant upsell list, worms, heart something, blood work, the whole gambit, Eventually I politely said no, the tech looked visibly irritated, literally left the room and never came back. We got the pcr test and left. The pcr came back negative, but I’m not surprised given when symptoms started. I really wanted to like this practice, but the vet tech upsell was so intense. Also the lack of concern for potentially exposing other animals at the practice to a likely contagious dog by wanting to keep them onsite for hours was really shocking.

This is the first vet I saw after moving to the area. First, I called around to different places, and their office gave me a lot of great information and listened patiently to all my questions. I ended up going here because of the pricing and subscription options, how friendly and informative they were throughout the process, the good reviews, and the convenience of the multiple locations. The waiting area was clean and comfortable, the receptionist was professional and friendly, the vet and vet tech were both really communicative and welcoming. I came with two cats who usually get really stressed out at the vet but they were playing with toys and eating treats. The vet noticed additional issues that my previous vet hadn't brought up, as well as more options to deal with old issues. Everything was explained thoroughly.
