How to Save Money at SNAP: Spay-Neuter Action Project of San Diego

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Can’t say enough good things about SD SNAP! I got a text msg the day after submitting my online application and was offered a last minute cancellation appointment. Took my fur baby Mia in the next morning at 7:30, check in took about 5mins, pick up was at noon and they gave me clear post op instructions plus contact info in case there’s any issues with recovery. Attached is a picture of Mia’s surgical site from when I picked her up. Dr. Paris did an absolutely amazing job with the spay surgery! Brittany, the surgical tech, followed up 48hrs post op to check in. They answered all my questions along the way. Price is very reasonable compared to private vets. Huge thanks to the whole SNAP team for taking such great care of our community’s fur babies. I’ll be donating and recommending you to everyone.❤️❤️❤️

SNAP provides a great service for the community, offering to spay and neuter your pets at low or no cost. I want to say that I am very grateful for them to offer this service to the community to help reduce pet overpopulation. I was able to get my female dog spayed at no cost and the process was smooth, efficient, and easy. She healed quickly and the incision was small and clean. If you are in need of fixing your pet, but you don't have the funds to do so, reach out to SNAP!

10/10 experience with every staff member I encountered! From scheduling to intake, everyone was incredibly kind, professional, and helpful. I visited the Neuter Scooter at Mira Costa Community College Learning Center and had three dogs fixed this week—one being my own, and the other two recent rescues. (I was here daily the on June 2nd - 4th). The scheduling team worked quickly to get me appointments for all three, even offering to do them on the same day. Because of funding, I needed to split them up over three days, and they were so accommodating and understanding. On my second visit, I mentioned that one of the e-collars seemed a bit large for my first pup, and the next day I was gifted backup collars—so thoughtful and appreciated. I truly felt remembered and cared for by the staff. The surgical work was excellent—clean incisions and smooth recoveries all around. Plus, the aftercare instructions, info on booster shots, and general guidance were super helpful. This is an incredible resource for our community, and I’m so thankful for SNAP San Diego and their amazing team!

Everyone at SNAP in El Cajon was friendly to me and my jack russell. He had a great recovery and they checked in with me via text to make sure he was healing well. I even emailed them some pictures to make sure everything looked normal and I received a response the very next morning! What they're doing at SNAP is such a help to families and their pets. Thank you, SNAP!

My two girls were in and out within a matter of hours after getting fixed. The staff takes good care of your fur babies and makes sure you have the information you need to properly care for your fur babies after you pick them up and take them home.
