How to Save Money at VCA Venture Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Staff and facility was great! I got a free wellness check certificate when I adopted my cat from the San Diego Humane Society. Thankfully it worked at any vca location, not just the ones in San Diego. Dr. Wolf was a great veterinarian. There also was a vet tech who was super sweet with my cat, Chip, as well. They weren’t rushing anything and helped answer questions I had. Front desk agent was kind as well. Facility was very clean and calming. I did call back asking a question because I was concerned about a broken nail, and the receptionist said they’d leave a message for Dr. Wolf, but I never heard back. I wish there was an easier way to contact the vet to see if I need to come in. I used the VCA app to chat with a professional, but the vet tech online just said I should call my vet.

7/24/23 After spending $400 and finding out Henry has stage 3 kidney disease when he already had stage 2 and no one told me... I was told the wrong diagnosis. Called and texted multiple times with no response from Dr. Chen. She told me had stage 2 when he really had stage 3 and already had stage 2 from his tests at VCA Urgent Care which was never relayed to me. Extremely disappointed and switching to Modern Animal. --------------------------------------------- 6/22/23 Dr. Chen is the most caring, amazing, wonderful, knowledgeable and sweet vet I've ever had the pleasure of speaking to on the phone. She spent all the time I needed on the phone talking with me about care for my diabetic, geriatric cat, Henry. She gave me so much good information and was so helpful. She made me feel like a good cat mom for taking such good care of him. She was kind and encouraging. She's going to follow up with me next week to see how his insulin dosage change is working. I just love her and we haven't even met! Thank you, Dr. Chen, you will keep me coming back. ------------------------- Dr. Pickering and Dr. Mackenzie are wonderful. They've helped out my Henry with his diabetes and helped me say goodbye to my Hermione today. Even if they cost a little more, I won't go anywhere else. Also, thank you to Teri and Jenny for being so kind.

Always the same story, high prices and very little medical treatment, more like: just give her more pills for that. It’s a Dr. Feelgood environment. What els? • Plenty of parking • Appointments required • No phone support • Office Visit $60 • Overheard Music • Ample room size • No overnight care • Air-conditioning • Clean and Smells fresh • Credited License in Los Angels • Fishtank (Open Lobby) •

Just called after i found a brand new stray cat. Elisa had such good sweet demeanor. Helped me a lot find possible resources. I'm sure she's even more helpful in person.

They truly will love and care for your pet. These people rock. The staff here has been extremely patient with my dog. We have been bringing him here since we got him at 8 weeks and have always had a pleasant experience. In September 2021, at 8 months old, our dog was traumatized at a doggy daycare (LA Dogworks) and developed some fear based aggressive behaviors. Afterwards, it became more difficult for him to be at the vet but they just keep providing us with more options for precautions to take prior to the visit. We've had to leave the facility without having his procedure done twice now and every time, I become terribly stressed and overwhelmed. However, I am beyond thankful for the staff and how understanding and empathetic they have been towards us and our dog. I don't know how I would be able to deal with this situation if the staff hadn't been so supportive of us. You guys are amazing. Thank you so much!
