How to Save Money at Eagle Rock Pet Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can't figure out how to reply to a comment on here so i'll just add-- the review wasn't really because of the timeliness issue. Although you guys are closed more days of the week than you are open, and really hard to get a hold of. What really sealed the one star for me was when I took my cat for a routine checkup here. The vet wanted to get a urine sample from her but refused to do it during the appointment; they sent me home to collect my cat's urine with some vague instructions. I'm not a medical professional so obviously i got cat piss all over the place. Maybe it was the doctor's sick idea of a joke. When I brought the sample in they told me it wasn't enough and to try it again. I decided to find a different vet that wouldn't ask me to do their work for them. Los feliz animal hospital has been awesome so far.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE! I was looking for an affordable vet to have my kittens spayed and neutered. I called this clinic, explained that my kittens were about 10 weeks old, and specifically asked if they could perform the procedure at their age. I was told yes, so I scheduled a consultation. On the day of the appointment, I brought both kittens with my sister. The waiting room was empty, and we were seen right away. The staff weighed the kittens, did a wellness exam, and asked if we had questions. We explained we wanted them spayed/neutered, microchipped, and asked about flea treatment. A nurse mentioned specials for kittens, and when the vet came in, she told us they’d need bloodwork before surgery and that chipping would be done at the same time to avoid extra pain. She also gave us advice about fleas and diet. Everything sounded fine, so we agreed to the bloodwork. When we checked out, the visit cost around $600, including about $180 per kitten for bloodwork. At the front desk, things went downhill. The three people at the desk didn’t know how much the procedure itself cost, and even after calling a manager, no one seemed sure. At one point, my sister and I weren’t even sure if we were supposed to be standing there because no one acknowledged us. Eventually, they figured out a total (after I reminded them I’d already paid for bloodwork) and scheduled the surgery for the following Wednesday. They wanted me to make a down payment for the surgeries but I was already put off by them so I didn’t, thank goodness. A few days later, I got a voicemail from Michael at the clinic, saying the vet usually waits until kittens are six months old to perform spay/neuter. I was furious—why did they schedule me, put my kittens through bloodwork, and take my money if they knew this? Worse, by the time my kittens turned six months, the bloodwork would need to be repeated, meaning I’d have to pay for it all over again. I called back and spoke to a woman who repeated the same explanation: “the doctor waits until six months. ” I told her that I had called ahead before scheduling and was told it was fine. I also told her that I would go to the clinic and demand my money back. But after talking it over with my sister, we decided to let it go, because it would probably be a lost cause and they likely wouldn’t refund me anyway. Later that same day, I got another voicemail, this time from Norma, saying they’d spoken to the doctor and manager and would go ahead with the procedure after all. By that point, I had completely lost trust. Between the incompetence of the front desk staff, the confusion over prices, the unnecessary bloodwork, and the lack of clear protocols, I would never allow them near my kittens again. I don’t know how their other services are, but from what I experienced, this clinic is disorganized, misleading, and more focused on money than proper care. I strongly advise you go somewhere else.

I had my baby boy, who is also my best friend “Luigi” go here for a few care needs and major dental work. He was in my life since he was 2 mos. and he turned 13 this pass Feb. Each time we visited, which was often these past few months, (due to the dental work and his age)we were greeted warmly and professionally. Not once did I, as Luigi’s dad, ever feel like I was dealing with heartless medical professionals that handled my dear friends needs, like insensitive robots. They genuinely cared and even showed love. Dr. Adler Always was so gentle and kind making the process always so easy and prescribing Luigi exactly what he needed without making me feel rushed or ever giving me the impression Luigi didn’t matter. Luigi was and will always be a fighter and bigger than his body gave him credit for. So, he was pretty feisty and could be a handful, but the staff always showed care and patience while handling him. He passed away almost 3 weeks ago now and I don’t really want to remember that exact date specifically, because he suffered terribly due to his on going breathing issues leading to a possible heart attack. He was strong for me and held on during the entire Uber ride to the emergency room. Long enough for me to be able to say “goodbye, see you soon “. He was always thinking of me, even then. Manny was very supportive over the phone the day Luigi passed. He did the best job explaining things to me in ways that I can understand and made me feel good when he mentioned he remembered Luigi and myself after one previous visit. I will always be grateful for this Manny, thank you. Every one here at this Eagle Rock location is hard at work to ensure your animals safety and well being, all while maintaining a level of respect, dignity and care that unfortunately some establishments lack. I will be bringing my “Chance” (a rescue that was abandoned on a freeway) “Marie” and our newest addition to the family “ Benjamin” here, for all there care needs. I trust, appreciate and respect all these wonderful people that commit there days and energy to show love and care for all of our babies. I know Luigi is happy where he is now, because you all took the very best care with him before he passed. I wish for wonderful days full of great health, love and peace for each and everyone of the staff here at Affordable Animal Hospital. Thanks so very much. You made a true friend for life in me. Sincerely, Michael, Chance, Marie, Luigi, Benjamin and Christian 🦋

This place used to be fine; theyd neglect to write my cats’ weight down on any paperwork but it was otherwise solid. I hadnt been back in a couple years when i returned today. First, the vet tech said “it’s hard to count her breaths” while doing the respiration assessment (bc my cat has long hair) which is troubling because breathing is a specific issue i said ive had concern with and it did not seem like she was confident in her assessment. Dr cornelius (?) made no effort to ameliorate himself to my nervous cat, and was visibly and verbally annoyed with her squirming a little while he forced open her mouth to look at her gums. Next, the vet techs were unable to do any of the tests on my cat because my she “got feisty” (i was not present but i believe she would not like getting tests—is this not common?), and they said i needed to purchase a sedative and return another time. Maybe this is normal but my cat is not like an especially antisocial cat so it surprised me. I do not care about professionalism for the sake of it but i witnessed a disorganized front desk of people arguing with each other trying to figure out the vaccine schedule for another guy and his dog; and, after id paid i told the vet tech i was just waiting for my cat still, and she straight up said “oh i kinda forgot about her back there”, which, fine, but insane to tell me to my face about someone obviously very important to me? I dont write reviews really but the vibes were very bad and i hope they do something about it. I will be trying a new vet for the remaining tests and treatment my cat needs.

Definitely recommend Affordable Animal Hospital (Eagle Rock). They gladly took in my senior chihuahua as a walk in since that morning he was going crazy at his mouth trying to get a tooth out and for a second I though he had something stuck in his mouth. They ended up doing a few exams and bloodwork to put him under and extracted 5 teeth, I was dreading it was going to be an arm and a leg but on the contrary they are reasonable and indeed affordable. It’s the next day and he’s back to his normal self happy self :)
