How to Save Money at VCA Sunset Animal Medical Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This vet is one block from my house and we were thrilled to know a vet was in the neighborhood. The one star is for the corporate overlords - the staff on site is fine. We got a new kitten and took the advice of staff...and the vibe was they had been trained to upsell this product..."the annual kitten plan" and it is a total sham. We were told that ALL exams and vaccines for kitten care are included but the annual plan expires two full months before his final round of shots are due. We were told we could sign up again for another year... no thanks. Again - very sad that this is the case. I hope the docs and staff can go independent. If they do, I think they would be reasonable and fair. Update I sent an email to the address provided and have not heard back.

Don't bring your pet here, there are better VCA's and definitely better vets out there. The prices continue to climb and they always recommend services my pet doesn't actually need, but of course theyre very good at making it sound urgent and that makes me sad for folks who don't know better or are too upset to realize theyre being fleeced. However, that's not the reason I'm no longer going to Sunset, the real reason is that I'm sick of how rude and incompetent their front desk staff is. Expect to be placed on hold forever. Expect to always be treated with contempt no matter how nice you are. Expect a poor value for the money you pay. Expect to wait longer than you were supposed to for reasons that have nothing to do with you. I've never been anything but kind and patient with their staff but apparently that doesn't entitle me to any consideration or respect. This is a very poorly managed office. They never have the medications/food that their vet prescribed. They never have the information I need. They have communication between themselves and with their customers. I went there because it was close to my house but I've come to regret giving them my hard earned money, they don't deserve it.

Absolutely ridiculous. I have tried to get my dog's medication twice now and they don't have someone who can open the cabinet. So now my dog is completely out of medication and they have no sympathy and no answers, just come back tomorrow. Some of us have to work and can't leave work. Why aren't you accommodating after hours or on weekends? As soon as I get the medications I'm finding a new vet. Sure enough, my dog just had a seizure at 1am.

We have been bringing our babies @domNdiamond (follow them on ig) for 6+ years! We love them all, everyone is VERY sweet and helpful! We are so blessed to have found them! All of the staff is just incredible! They always find a way to get you in ASAP for emergencies! The DR's explain everything so well and does not try to up sell you on things that your fur-baby doesn't need! One of our dogs are pet aggressive so they always make sure we can get him in and straight to a room - they treat him like royalty LOL. Jennifer is BY FAR our fav receptionist! She always is so warm and welcoming! She is like a part of our lil fur family- Dom and Diamond both LOVE her! She is just INCREDIBLE!- I cant explain how much we appreciate and value her! Also our fav Dr's are Gaelin & Cynthia! They always make sure our babies are in TIP TOP shape and give us the best treatment options and great recommendations! I could go on and on about this amazing place and amazing people! But ill stop the mushiness! Just know if you want a place to make sure your babies are healthy and with people who actually cares this is your PLACE! They always work with us with pricing as well! I just can't say enough good things about them! I am a crazy dog mom and anytime I call in and ask questions they always calm my fears and answer any questions! I also look for a lot in a vet and I finally found them- trust me we go in a lot and have never been unsatisfied!! Thank you VCA and staff!!
