How to Save Money at Happy Valley Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The clinic has great veterinarians. I’ve taken my dog there since she was a puppy. She was spayed there and had two TTA surgeries. They’ve done a great job and respond quickly to texts.

This was my first visit as my dogs are generally healthy. I was impressed from the moment I walked in the door. Fast service and got us weighed and in a room in minutes. Short wait for Melissa to come in and get data and another short wait for the Dr. Elsing to come in to evaluate my boy. Short words to describe the visit. Compassion, understanding, thorough, fair pricing and options. I will be telling all my pet owning friends about this facility and I am glad to have found a safe place for my beloved pets. Thank you Happy Valley AZ Pet Vets!

Felt a bit sneaky with staff there. Brought our dog in at 6:30pm. They close at 7pm & told me I had to pay after hours fees. I agreed even though it made me raise my eyebrows. We walked out the door at 7:00pm on the dot. My dog had a couple cuts on her head. At that point it felt like a car sales dealership approach. They wanted to shave her head, put her to sleep, maybe?? Give her stitches. I asked isn’t there a way we can wet her hair to see if we can see better before going through anesthesia, stitches, a cone, etc, & just under $1,000, and they just side stepped the question. Now I feel like I’m at a car dealership negotiating what to do for my dog that we love. I asked if there were any other options. The assistant went & talked to the doctor & said they could take a few things off getting me to around $800. Wow really thanks so much! I asked for prescriptions only for infection & pain. Asked 3 times if I could get an ointment too & she side stepped the question & finally said they don’t have any ointments. Really??? At an animal hospital? Seems like they’re in it for the money & have their acting roles down. Don’t even know if I’ve ever wrote a review for anything before but this one kind of ticked me off walking out paying $150 with after hours fees???? Obviously won’t ever trust going there again.

Our 3 dogs have been to this Vet for about 7 years. One recently diagnosed with cushings. Since the diagnoses in May, they have taken us for 3800 dollars. Please shop around. Our second pet was scheduled for surgery on her knee. It was noted by the vet, due to her heart murmur they needed to do an echo of her heart first, to make sure surgery was safe. Surgery day arrives, we are on time for check in, no echo has been scheduled. (Thinking they will do day of) and they never scheduled it. This vet location wanted to make their 1500 bucks so bad, they then tried to talk me into the surgery without the echo. Wow. I said no thank you, and left. We have since found an amazing specialist in glendale for our cushings baby and have found that the tests needed for her are 70% less, than what we were price gouged at from this location. Horrid horrid place. Do not recommend.

Very grateful for the care we always receive. I fully trust every vet in the office with the care of my pets. Dr. McGee spent a substantial amount of time explaining and going over labs and X-rays. It is very reassuring when the time is spent going over a plan and throughly examing our fur babies.
