How to Save Money at The Small Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought 2 stray kittens to be looked at, and this vet was very unhelpful. They used acronyms instead of real words and never explained in detail, like I should already know what was going on. These kittens were sick, which I've never dealt with sick kitties. It was overwhelming and I felt like I was annoying the vet by asking questions. They also didn't do a fecal or deworming, and didn't give them antibiotics for their illness. I found out afterwards that any vet should have done that, or at least mentioned it. They then wanted to charge me another vet visit to give them dewormer when I called!!! I asked to speak to the vet, which they told me they would call me back. I never heard back from them. I'll never go back to this vet again.

I have been bringing my Sebastian to The Small Animal Clinic since he was a puppy, almost 5 years now. He always gets the attention and service he needs from the knowledgeable staff and is taken care of and diagnosed appropriately. I have never seen any of the staff with anything less than a smile! Appointments are quick and easy. Usually in and out within an average of about 30 minutes. Very prepared and organized when we arrive! I can't imagine having to look into changing veterinarians and can't find a reason I would ever have to! They have taken great care of my little man and make sure he is and stays healthy!! Love these guys! Thank y'all for all you do!!

I would not recommend bringing your fur babies here if you want to get the the right care they need. This clinic doesn’t follow up when they tell you they’re going to, they don’t completely explain the process your pet needs thoroughly, and the staff isn’t very knowledgeable. Every time you ask a questions, they have to go run and ask the vet. Please save your money and go to any other clinic than this one. They told me my dog had heart worms and when I brought her back for treatment, they gave her a completely different treatment than I was originally told. Who gives heart worm prevention to an already infected dog? I know they’re scamming for money if you want me to be completely honest.

Dr. Wolfe and staff are fantastic. Prices are fair and they do a good job taking care of your pet. Very thankful to have them. They have done a good job taking care of my cat Aubie since he was a kitten. Highly recommended.

I just moved down to Mobile from out of state and I have a particularly sensitive cat, so I was worried about finding a good vet. Small Animal Clinic has been so kind and so helpful, I’ve brought my cat in twice now to two different doctors and they’ve both been amazing. Brittany at the front desk is always great too!! They also always get me scheduled quick and it’s not a long wait when I get there. I really appreciate everything they’ve done for me in such a short time.
