How to Save Money at VCA Health Associates Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The technicians and staff treat our girl so nicely. Also offer health care program for your pets. Great pet food selection also. Great care of our baby girl.

I’ve been coming here for years now even though the prices are higher for most services. But just like when you choose to buy an outfit from Sam’s because tge quality is so high and you are willing to pay for the product, this is really no different as the vets and all staff are at another level and you are getting the best for the best money can buy if you come to see the vets here on Iota. We’ve brought all of our pets to see Dr. Sartor for over 30 years and that is why we stay here, and I give it an excellent review

They were so such nice people they were so good to me and to Jr. when I took him there. I love him so much, and I am going to miss him. They handled his euthanasia so well. They let me be with him and I was so glad. Then transferred him to blue bonnet pet cremation.

We adopted a dog from a local organization who recommended this facility. Each time we have taken the dog, we have had to wait well beyond the appointment time. While not happy, we had signed a care plan with them for 12 months, so we continued to use them. We were told our dog needed to have a tooth removed and a cleaning. They told us to bring our dog at 7:30am and not to not feed the dog in the morning. Having not heard back, we called around noon and were told they had not started the procedure. We called back at 3:30 and were told they had two other surgeries that had complications and had still not started on our dog. This meant our dog was in a kennel without food for the entire day. The tech told use she had been walked and had fluids. The tech thentold us they would start on our dog at 4pm and to be there at 5:30 to pick her up because they close at 6pm. After I arrived, the Dr said they had only cleaned the teeth because the x-ray showed she needed other teeth pulled and it was too late in the day to treat her. Because of their poor scheduling, our dog was stuck in a kennel all day without food. Knowing they had limited time, they still put her under anesthesia late in the day when the cleaning could've been easily rescheduled for when they planned to remove the other teeth. The Dr gave my wife one story and the tech gave me a different story. They added on fees before the surgery began - including a fee to "quick read" the x-rays which was meant to avoid this exact situation. They should've known before starting that more teeth needed to be pulled. The staff was rude and the Dr was dismissive. We will be filing a complaint with the state. They will not let us out of the care plan without charging more than the value of the plan, and it is not transferable to another VCA.

This clinic is completely negligent and unprofessional, and after being a client for two years, I will never return. They have screwed me over four times in the past three months, and this last experience was the final straw. I booked boarding for my two dogs two months in advance. Two days before drop-off, I even called the clinic to confirm they had their medication refills and food ready for their stay—not once did anyone mention any issue or “concern” with my Schnauzer. Then, when I arrived the day before my trip, I was blindsided. Upon drop-off, they hit me with a $1,000 bill claiming that my dogs absolutely required vaccinations in order to stay there. But here’s the most shocking part—they NEVER even administered those vaccines during their entire stay. That is not only dishonest, but also extremely dangerous for obvious reasons. Then Paula from the front desk called and informed me the vet was “not comfortable” boarding my Schnauzer and that I’d need to find a backup plan immediately—less than 24 hours before my trip. Paula is a huge cause for concern. This was handled with zero professionalism or compassion. They even tried to convince me that my dog is “aggressive,” which is absolutely not true. My Schnauzer is not aggressive—he just doesn’t like being held down or restrained, and honestly, neither would I. That doesn’t make him dangerous; it makes him a normal dog. For context: my Schnauzer goes to Dogtopia every single day, plays with over 20 dogs daily, and has boarded there with zero issues. The only reason we didn’t board him at Dogtopia this time was because they were full. If he truly had aggression problems, that would not be possible. Clearly, the issue here is with this clinic’s handling and attitude. They also insisted he be heavily sedated with trazodone for the entire stay, which was never discussed before. I have never in my life been to a clinic with so little compassion. The only saving grace here is the other girls at the front desk, who actually treat my dog like an animal and not like some dangerous creature. Unfortunately, that’s not enough to make up for how this place operates. Add in the multiple billing issues I’ve had before (like unauthorized charges for food and medications I never requested), and it’s clear this clinic cares more about money than the well-being of their patients. I strongly advise finding another clinic. This one has lost all trust and respect. EDIT: Upon pickup they forgot the Apoquel we paid for, one of my dog's leashes, and a $50 bed. I've had to return on multiple occasions to pick up our items. Also the issue was never needing to administer and pay for the vaccines--it was the fact they were never even administered during their stay, which is beyond negligent and dangerous for my dogs. I was understanding as they said they we're super busy however, had they contracted something during their stay-- I would've pursued SERIOUS action.
