How to Save Money at Vanguard Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My husband and I are retired and our two fur babies are our children. With that said, Dr. Navarro is an excellent vet. He truly cares for our animals and we have been seeing him for many years now. He is professional, knowledgeable, friendly, and most of all caring. We have referred many friends to him. Unfortunately his staff is just the opposite. We call to make appointments and get an answering machine saying that they're busy and you should text them, and it doesn't matter what time of day you call whether it's early morning mid-morning or afternoon . we leave voicemails and never get a call back. This has happened several times, not just on one occasion .The vet assistant seems nice until you step on her toes! We got hit with $157 blood test that was "recommended" NOT required (these were her words, not mine ) because our dog suffers from allergies. Mind you we have had our baby on allergy medicine as long as we can remember and have never had to have a blood test. When asked to speak to Dr. Navarro about this, suddenly he was not available and she never allowed me to speak to him personally. To add insult to injury. When I said we did not need this blood test nor could we afford it. She replied with a stark remark of well. You know dogs are expensive right? How rude. We would like to speak to Dr. Navarro personally about this issue but you can't get past his staff, I wonder why... In reply to vanguard vet clinic's response to our review: The response on behalf of vanguard vet is misleading and obviously written by office staff. Probably the same staff that we are writing the review about. We stand by our review so that the general public may know what to expect from the staff at vanguard vet clinic. Once again, Dr. Navarro is a wonderful veterinarian and we will miss seeing him. But we were not given any other option but to seek out a new vet due to as you know the mistreatment we have received from the staff. Upon the new veterinarians review of our dogs medical records. He did not even understand why a blood test would be needed and gave us the necessary medication without any questions whatsoever.

They are good, I just have a suggestion..when applying the vaccine, do it quickly because my sweet dog ..she was anxious.(She had 2 shots).

We were greeted as soon as we walked in. The tech that cared for my 2 fur babies was quick to draw blood from my Thor, Bella was a bit challenging, but she was patient and quick. We were in and out. I highly recommend this place for your pets.

Due to the responses and the reviews that I'm seeing I will not be going to this clinic. Too many people complaining about the staff and too many excuses from their responses. Every customer cannot be wrong especially when it's mainly staff related problems.

Currently am a client of here. Have had positive experiences in the past. Routine and urgent care went without any issues. My issue is that the staff are hanging up on calls rather than answering. No answering machine at all. Can't make an appointment if they hang up on you.
