How to Save Money at CityVet | Alamo Heights Veterinary Clinic & Urgent Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

01.01.2026: Check out lady REFUSED to give me my receipt. That is unacceptable! Will be contacting corporate, if any. Ruby was attacked at a local dog park this morning, New years day. Needed stitches for a hole in her ear. Never had to come to doggie ER. Vet visits, sure. Not this. Never expected THIS! Well, I was in a frozen, ugly cry, panic.. bc of course, OF COURSE, this would happen on NEW YEARS DAY. Everything is closed. Well these kind folks love critters enough to have come to work today to make sure us pet parents can get the help we need. Everyone was amazing. Front desk. Triage nurse. Doctor Mallory. Everything was clean. I was there several hours. I'm sure double, probably triple the normal waiting time. That's ok. They had someone call in due to illness and I'm sure everyone else is off for holiday. I didn't mind. I had her backpack, food, toys, blanket, we were ok. She's still in surgery, I'll be picking her up shortly. *Surgery went well, took awhile for her to wake up and come together. Doctor explained things better than any human doctor. Very at ease, a people person, reassuring and so, so, kind. Doctor was an absolute gem! So thankful my dog was in good hands. The team that did her sutures was so incredibly gentle and patient with her. She didn't like the first attempt at the sedative shot and cried. They talked her through it and she was just fine. Will update again after all is healed in two weeks. Last front desk girl REFUSED to give me an invoice before leaving. How does my dog's care, surgery, at that!, not warranty a receipt for a medical procedure!! UNACCEPTABLE. THAT IS ILLEGAL. WILL BE CONTACTING CORPORATE OFFICE. 01.24.2026: Did NOT return. Had her vet remove the stitches and drain her ear. She's got a continuous fluid filled ear pocket on both sides due the type of stitching. Apparently it should have been a quilt stitch to avoid this refilling of fluid in her ear. 3 weeks now of this fluid draining. He said that some dogs take up to 10 weeks to heal from complications exactly like this. So we drain weekly and he monitors.

I couldn’t ask for a better place to take Clover than City Vet. Her Veterinarian is there, along with a team of highly qualified staff and it just so happens to be an ER Vet as well. She has playtime every few hours. Walks twice a day. I get updates and photos from one of their staff members at least every other day. We’re so blessed to have city vet, you really couldn’t ask for more! If you’re contemplating taking your pet anywhere else look no further. You know that you’re sending your animal/animals to the right place when they’re excited to get there. I’m going to share a few, well quite a few photos of Clover when she’s there to give you your pets city vet experience. Thanks again City Vet, y’all are a godsend and we don’t know what we’d do without you! See you next time. Sincerely, Camille Malek

This applies only to the weekend vet and vet tech. I raced to the vet on a Saturday because my dog ate cocoa in a cookie and cupcake … I was on the phone with ASPCA who vets have you call first and they charge $110 (worth it). They were in the middle of asking me questions and the vet tech was asking us to approve almost $2000 in charges I asked her to wait but she had my husband sign…she could hear me answering questions. ASPCA advised my dog would be fine and no procesdires were needed. I ran out to tell them and gave the vet tech the phone. It was literally a minute later and the vet tech said the doctor insisted on talking to the ASPCA…I wondered why until I saw that minute call was so she could charge $250 and they had somehow done the blood tests already. The visit was $800 but would have been $300ish but they seemed to not want to wait 30 seconds to let me tell them what the ASPCA had to say. Then they wanted to pile on so much more…my dog never seemed sick and the vet and tech seemed to want to beat ASPCA’s assessment (which they insist you calling). The blood tests that they somehow took so quickly were also NEVER explained. I asked at checkout about the results and the tech said “oh she’s fine” which is less than a thorough response for $300. I asked whether they would show anything that quickly and she said “yeah probably”. I really like the other vets and techs and never feel like they are just trying to pile on.and avoid hearing what they seemed to already know…that my dog was fine and ASPCA would say she didn’t need blood tests or to speak to them.

I would not recommend this clinic. My wife took our black lab puppy after he hadn’t eaten much for 2 days. They took X-rays and confirmed he had a blockage in his lower intestine. They tried to pressure us into a nearly $4500 surgery, claiming no other option. Luckily we reached out for a second opinion. Our primary vet looked at the X-rays and based on his condition at the time, felt we had enough time for less invasive options. We removed him from this location after they wouldn’t help us further and he was stabilized and treated at our primary. He passed the object without surgery a day later. Thank goodness for vets that are willing to use their brain to solve an issue, and not so willing to cut an animal open for a quick fix and/or hefty price tag. This practice is NOT that. (Our primary quoted us for surgery in worst case scenario and it was half the price).

We took our whippet Cheeto in for an Urgent Care Visit with Dr. Jones. She is so so kind and thorough, a genuinely a good person. Despite being busy, she took her time to examine Cheeto, explain what was going on, and answer questions. We are new to the area and are excited to establish with Dr. Jones at CityVet for our pet wellness care. Their facilities are super nice and the staff and Drs. are even nicer.
