How to Save Money at Blue Cross Pet Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We had such a hard time finding a place to take our Oreo to that wouldn't charge us an exorbitant amount of money. We knew it was time to put him to sleep, but we felt like so many places take advantage of people when they are most vulnerable. At Blue Cross Pet Clinic, we paid a total of about $165. We did not choose cremation at all, so this was the least expensive way for us. I did ask for a paw print, which they don't do anymore, but thankfully, they were able to do it for us. Blue Cross did an amazing job making us feel comfortable, answering any questions, and giving us private moments we needed to say our goodbyes. The doctor explained the process as she was doing it and explained what each syringe would do for Oreo. His passing was truly painless and merciful - he never even flinched. We have never done this before, but Blue Cross truly made us feel like they sympathized with us. There were no smiles from anyone, just very sad and empathetic expressions. I don't know if any other place does this, but they had a little lantern on the check-in desk, and it said "If this light is on, someone is saying Goodbye. Please speak softly during this difficult time." As hard of a day as it was, they really made it so much better. They also gave us a special bag to place him in to go home and be buried. They didn't rush us at all and really just showed a lot of sympathy, some even having tears in their eyes. 🐾🌈🤍

I've been going to these folks for several years. The ladies up front are friendly, efficient, and respond quickly to calls and text messages. The vets and techs have all been fantastic! Not only that, but my dogs are comfortable and happy to come back, time after time. I've been to serval vets over the years, but I will be staying with Blue Cross now that I've found them! Highly recommend!

I’ve been going to Blue Cross Pet clinic for years . They care for my fur babies with such care and attention to every detail. Always address all my concerns. The front desk is always so friendly and welcoming, all the Dr’s are absolutely amazing. Dr Cousins is so kind and caring. Last year I had to put my 17 year old chihuahua down one of the hardest things I had to do, they treated her with such kindness and tenderness. I received a sympathy card signed by ALL the Dr’s and staff. Something I will always remember!! Recommend 10/10

Dr Cousins is so kind and reassuring. I feel very heard when I ask questions. Amanda the assistant was also very helpful and listened to my concerns. Both were great in handling my kitty and though she was a little scared they were so gentle with her. I had heard many great things about this clinic over the years from friends and family and online reviews. I’m so glad I decided to come here when I adopted my new kitty. I plan to bring my other 4 pets in when they need care! I have no doubts they’ll treat them all well, even my grumpy seniors. Thank you!
