How to Save Money at VCA Canada Kew Beach Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can't recommend Dr. Kathy Alcock enough. Before she took over, the service at the clinic was fine, but things took a turn during COVID. My cat seemed to be a bit traumatized by being handed off at the curb, and ever since he became fearful at appointments and we were told he needed to be sedated every appointment. Since Dr. Kathy Alcock took over, it has been a complete turnaround. Every appointment is smooth and as stress-free as possible. My cat used to need 2-3 people to hold him down for shots, but she effortlessly came in and used a clever tip of putting a small cone on him and within seconds gave him his shots all on her own minimizing any fear and stress. She does not require him to be sedated, and is able to work with him and wait until he is more comfortable during his visits. She even followed up with me via text message once after an appointment to see how he was doing with a medicine, showing how compassionate and caring she really is.

The service we have received at Kew Beach Veterinary Hospital has been exceptional! We are first-time puppy parents to our rescue Humphrey and we've had A LOT of questions along the way. Everyone from the front reception to the amazing doctors have all been wonderful. We are very pleased with the care Humphrey has received and would definitely recommend Kew Beach Veterinary Hospital to anyone looking for a new vet.

Been going here since my pup was 6 weeks. The only real good interaction I’ve had was the first couple months when it was ran July someone else. Ever since then I’ve gotten nothing but biased treatment. No matter what smile I put on going in there im spoken to like a child. I’ve overheard racist remarks directed at me, they’ve made racist remarks to my girlfriend not knowing she’s my girlfriend in reference to me. It’s so heartbreaking. It’s heartbreaking and sucks. It’s already hard enough being black in this society to receive this kind of treatment at a vet. I work hard for my money, they might as well have a sign saying minorities not welcome because for 2 years that’s how I was treated. 👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿 So very bad that I am still subjected to this nonsense and all I did was exist.

I am so very grateful for the professional and compassionate care that Kew Beach Veterinary Hospital has provided for my labradoodle over the past 10 years and counting! The vets and support staff are excellent, always taking the time to thoroughly discuss my dog's care and any treatment required. I am so grateful to have such great vets right in my neighbourhood!

I absolutely love this place. I never thought I would like a veterinarian office. After my experience with a couple of them, this place is like a 5 start hotel or spa. VERY thorough with questions and examinations, super friendly. They don't try and rip you off. They're right up front, honest. As a business owner, giving custom satisfaction is a top priority. They got this.
