How to Save Money at Bickford Park Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can't say enough good things about the care the folx have given my pup. Every single time we come in for something routine or for an urgent issue, they give us the full menu of options. Everything is explained with a pros and cons so we can make an informed decision about whether or not to do something. I've never felt like we're being up-charged to do something unnecessary. We've had both Dr. Penkala and Dr. Brown see our dog, they've both been excellent. All of the technicians and front desk staff have been phenomenal. We really feel like we're in good hands here and we're so fortunate to have them in our neighbourhood.

I went in to purchase hills prescription urgent care food for my dog. My vet said all vets should have the product and that I don’t need a prescription to get the food. When I asked the front receptionist for the product they responded with is my pet a patient here? Do I have a prescription for it? And why do I need it? I have purchased the same product from here multiple times and they would gladly provide me with the product. I’ve noticed that with my prior dealings with this vet they are more concerned with taking my money and not the care of my beloved pets. I would not recommend using this vet there are so many other options in the area with a caring staff that would accommodate your needs.

Thank you for helping me navigate the sudden loss of my cat. Your staff are incredible - so kind and caring. Gretel's first visit to a veterinarian was yours, as a kitten, and it was sadly her last. I am so thankful for you folks, especially since I was a weeping disaster. Kind, understanding, great people. I have never had a long wait time to be seen, and they provide you with many options if your pet is deceased or at their end of life. Highly recommended and very thankful.

Every encounter I've had with vets and support staff have always been nothing but pleasant. I've been bringing my two fur babes here for several years and am always left feeling confident they're in the best hands. Just look at 'em! Thank you BPAH for the outstanding care and peace of mind you have given me and my babies all these years. Vet staff truly are the unsung heros we need ❣️

Bickford Park Animal Hospital has the most kindest, helpful staff I have ever encountered. They were my cats vet for many years. They patiently and graciously helped me navigate my cats many ailments. They always made me feel supported, and every interaction I had with any person on their team was met with absolute kindness. During the pandemic they were still open to the public when many places were not. I am grateful they were since that is when my cat was diagnosed with Diabetes and Pancreatitis. While seeing a high volume of patients daily, they had put understandable and reasonable covid precautions in place, including a sign on the door to call when bringing your animal in for their appointment. I was not allowed in and I 100% respected this very reasonable precaution as i did not want to put any of the staff at risk of being infected when they were already putting themselves at risk working during that time. It was amazing to see how well they upheld their high level of care for their patients and navigated working and caring for their patients in the midst of the global pandemic. I appreciate all they did for my special babe. I will never forget their constant kindness.
