How to Save Money at Birch Lane Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Birch lane was wonderful to deal with. They were able to get my kitty in last minute who was sick and was vomiting everything he ate up, first time at this clinic as my vet couldn’t take him till the next day.We figured out what was wrong figured a game plan out and got him into surgery at their other clinic in forest. I appreciate the urgency, care and compassion.

This is a such a wonderful Veterinarian Clinic, from all staff, their professionalism, cleanliness, and knowledge, to being extremely warm and friendly. Not being from the Province, we've had 2 not so great experiences at other veterinary clinics in the area, however, when I asked for recommendations from several neighbours in my new building, all 3 highly suggested Birch Lane, and I am so thankful that they did. We were not patients, and I had finally come to the need of putting my little girl to forever sleep, prior to suffering having begun. After a long, yet uneventful, 11 year kidney disease diagnosis; she was going to be 21 in August, and was succumbing to it over the past month. I was heartbroken just waiting throughout the night with her, until Birch Lane opened at 8:30am (their answering machine offers many emergency available options, which this was not), as her condition seemed to be worsening quickly, and spoke with Christina who was very kind, apologetic, and patient while taking down our information. She was able to offer a 10:00am appointment which surprised me, and I so appreciated the quick response time. Upon arrival, Christina met us with such kindness, and was extremely helpful with all after arrangement options, first showing me their brochure, and then bringing every item in to view. Dr. Rachel came in to see us, and I don't know what it was, her voice and demeanor were oddly soothing to my girl (and myself), she wasn't scared being there, (normally she absolutely would have been). She walked me through the steps, what to expect, asking my preferences, and brought in some cheese after my cat was fascinated by the smell on her hands, that she had just given to a puppy patient. Sara assisted us as well, and again, we were put further at ease with the overall care and kindness. (This was now obvious what this place was about to me, they have their own pet family members, they truly care; their compassion was definitely not "just" customer service.) Dr. Rachel took my girl out to sedate her, and she hugged her neck, in a way she has only ever, ever done with me, again giving me such strong reassurance that she trusted Dr. Rachel so easily. (A side note, I have been through this before, and am so thankful they sedate to calm before using the catheter...many places do not; giving her a much more peaceful experience, and giving me the time to talk to, and be with her as well.) Sara took her out again for the catheter, and chatted with me, offering anything I may need, and welcomed any questions and to come get them if we needed anything. Finally, Dr. Rachel came back for the final injections, also talking with me, again gently walking me through things (I'm guessing they all knew information was likely not sticking too well in the moment), and stayed with us, until confirming when she had officially passed. I was given as much time as needed, and before she left, I honestly will not forget Dr. Rachel putting her hand on mine in the manner she did, I genuinely felt less alone in that moment. For a horrible, surreal, and last place we wanted to be...life event, I am incredibly appreciative of everyone we met, the help they gave us, the gentle, caring, and loving manner in which they treated my baby girl, and genuinely supporting me through this excruciatingly painful experience...truly, thank you. 💔 I can 100% see why Birch Lane was so highly recommended to me, and I will without a doubt go to them for any veterinarian needs I may have in the future.

Brought my little dog in for annual shot and the oral meds. Great visit with vet and staff. My dog was excited to leave the house until she remembered the vet is the car ride for the needle and the scary stethoscope to make sure she is healthy. See yall next year!!
