How to Save Money at The Holistic Vet

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Such an incredible experience at this vet clinic my dog was suffering from chronic diarrhea from three doses of antibiotics over the last year. My previous vet kept prescribing me drugs to stop the diarrhea, but did not consider gut repair at all. My dog went from chronic diarrhea for six months to perfect stool within one week if anyone knows how stressful it is to have a dog with diarrhea, you can’t even take them for proper walks because cleanup is very challenging. I cannot rave about this clinic enough and I am so grateful to find help for my little dude highly suggest! !!

Do yourself a favour and just get on the waiting list! It’s long for a reason but you will NOT regret it. I owe my sanity and my dog’s life to him and I can’t thank Dr. Sasan enough. He’s the absolute best. We struggled for 2 years with traditional vets until we got into this clinic and after ONE visit our mini australian shepherd, Atlas, was essentially cured. It was shocking and relieving but he’s been amazing ever since and our lives (both Atlas’ and mine 😅) have gotten SO much better. I owe so much to Dr. Sasan and I can’t recommend him enough. His team and himself listens, are patient, gentle, understanding, and never once did I feel like a crazy pet mom - if anything he validated everything I was feeling. The best part is that his advice and practice WORK. Our Story: (hoping it maybe can help someone!) It didn’t matter the season, the environment, the climate, where we lived - toronto, vancouver, california…. Atlas’ symptoms continued on and off throughout the week. Every traditional vet we saw was confused by his symptoms but ultimately assumed it was food/environmental allergies and sent us on our way with no real help. His symptoms were: • intense ear scratching (to the point of bleeding sometimes) • head shaking (sometimes accompanied by the scratching) • his affected ear would sit in a lower position and he would look very uncomfortable (sometimes both ears would be affected, sometimes just one) • groaning while all of this happened His coat/skin was healthy, his paws were normal and ears were clean as a whistle. These symptoms alone don’t match up with allergies (and it didn’t make sense since Atlas always could eat anything) yet i was repeatedly told it was food allergies and sent on our way with an EXTREMELY restricted diet and no other help besides suggesting allergy medication. At my wits end, seeing absolutely no improvement or change in Atlas for 2 years, I put ourselves on the waitlist for Dr. Sasan. When we arrived for our appointment he asked about flea & tick medication (Atlas had been on Simparica Trio) and suggested it might be causing this reaction. It wasn’t until that moment I realized the month I started him on it, his symptoms slowly started (kicking myself for not making that connection now). He asked for us to forego the monthly doses and see if he improves. Our appointment was at the end of October and within a week of not administering that November dose, ALL of Atlas’ symptoms went away. We had a follow up, his diet is completely open to everything (which means no food allergies - just like i knew!) and he has improved dramatically. And guess what? his symptoms haven’t been seen since October ‘23 and it’s now March ‘24! Dr. Sasan sent us home with a ton of information on natural remedies for common ailments, holistic flea and tick remedies, and even healthy food recipes to cook. I’ve never seen Atlas happier and healthier and I feel good knowing he’s back to normal. Don’t give up, advocate for your pets, and trust your gut!

Been going to Dr.H since my dog was a puppy and he is hands down the best vet out there! Not only are him and his staff absolutely incredible, but they truly care about their patients and make every visit accommodating and an enjoyable experience. Pablo loves Dr.H and his staff and is always excited to pay them a visit. If you care about the well-being of your pet and want the absolute best care for them, this is the place for you!

My initial review of Dr. Haghighat and his staff was posted around December 2019. It was 2 months after l first brought my then 5 year old sweet Boston Terrier, suffering from a horrible itchy skin condition and hair loss. Her conventional vet recommended a drug called Apoquel which contributed to some dogs developing cancerous tumors after use, so l turned that treatment and clinic down and came up to Newmarket to see Dr. Haghighat. My dog had allergies, immune disorders and vaccine related problems. Within 2 months with holistic treatment, she improved quite a lot! That is when l gave a google review of 5 stars to the Newmarket Holistic Vet clinic because things were going very well. Today, a year and a bit later.. I am updating my review. If l could give 10 plus stars ✨ out of 5... I certainly would! Incredible difference!! .. (See photos below!) The Holistic treatment given to my dog saved her life! She has gained weight, energy, skin improvement, is playful again and her hair has grown back. Below are the pictures....hair loss Pic (Oct. 16, 2019)....Most recent with hair growth 2 pics (February 11, 2021) Thank you to "dog lifesaver" Dr. Haghighat and his wonderful caring staff... Bernadette, Sidonie, Sydney and Reka!
