How to Save Money at Village Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Village Animal Clinic is truly a gem in Markham! The care and attention they provide are exceptional, and we only wish we had found them sooner. Our 13-year-old Shih-poo had a recurring ear infection, and the team went above and beyond to address it. Instead of simply prescribing drops and sending us on our way, they ensured the issue was fully resolved through follow-up visits and a tailored treatment plan. Their genuine care and dedication to our pet’s well-being truly stood out. Leslie, the owner, was incredibly thorough during the initial consultation, taking the time to understand our dog’s history. Kathy, the associate vet, was equally attentive, offering practical solutions while showing immense compassion. It’s clear they both deeply care about their patients. Having visited many clinics over the years, this one stands head and shoulders above the rest. Village Animal Clinic provides the best service we’ve ever experienced, and we wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone looking for exceptional pet care!

Nothing but the finest and most friendly vet care I've ever experienced. Ever. Helpful, eager, knowledgeable, and above all, compassionate. Maisie will miss the whole team here, though she'd never admit it! You've all done us a great service that won't soon be forgotten. Thank you to each and every member of staff!

Took my new puppy to village animal clinic for puppy exam, fecal test, vaccine and deworm. Was thrilled to be able to get an appointment in early as my puppy has not been vet checked. I’ve called twice before coming to the clinic to inquire about the services, availability and both times the receptionist on the phone was friendly and patient with my questions. On the day of the appointment, Sally at the reception was very friendly and welcoming and it made me feel instantly at ease as I was initially very nervous for my first visit. Dr Hopkins and the staffs that all came around and saw the puppy was so positive and warm. Dr Hopkins also provided a lot of information and helpful knowledge and was every patient with my questions and handling the puppy. I read a lot of horror stories online on high vet fees and found the fees here to be very reasonable and fair. Overall I had a great experience visiting the clinic and have confidence they will take good care of my pup’s needs.

Amazing care at this clinic. We’ve seen all three vets - Dr. Larkin is usually the one taking care of our two senior cats, but we’ve seen Dr. Brangers and Dr. Hopkins as well. All three have been very thorough with their care, and have shown so much patience and kindness at every visit. I’ve never felt rushed during an appointment - they always take time to listen and answer all my questions and investigate every concern thoroughly. Especially grateful to Dr. Larkin, who has been taking care of our sweet cat Sesame through a strange and stressful series of health concerns. She has been SO thorough and meticulous (and so kind and caring)! She’s an angel. The entire team (including vet techs, reception, etc) has been so friendly and compassionate, I’m truly blown away. It might sound like a cliche, but I really do feel like they treat my pets as if they’re their own. I’m so so so grateful to have such a wonderful team taking care of my two babies.

I cannot say enough about the quality of the staff, the physicians and the service they have provided to our pets for more than a decade. They have always been accommodating when we needed those urgent appointments, are highly empathetic, extremely experienced and personable. A great combination of talent and care that anyone who loves their pets will appreciate.
