How to Save Money at St. George Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I would like to thank the staff at St. George animal hospital for being able to promptly see my 6-year-old cat tonight. We brought her in with what we thought was a bone break but turned out to be something completely opposite. Doctor was super amazing. Took x-rays and was able to diagnose our cat with something else which isn't what we thought was wrong with her. But we're just glad we got an answer. She is resting comfortably at home now and hopefully will be on the mend. We will be sure to return in the future again and also let others know of your clinic so they can come as well.

We recently made the switch over and had our first visit here with Dr. Peter. Our girl kept getting bad ear infections. He actually administered the medication for her and her ears have been great ever since. The other vet just gave us drops and did not even tell us proper information whereas Dr. Peter educated us on the dogs ear canal. Will definitely be returning next time and so happy we switched over. 😊

I finally found a vet that feels comfortable and safe for both me and my dog. Dr. Peter and Ms. Catherine are welcoming and patient with my dog, who has anxiety and can get aggressive. I’ve been to multiple vets, but none of them felt right. They were often pushy, didn’t listen to my concerns, and would quickly declare my dog in excellent health without a thorough examination. They’d recommend unnecessary injections and insist on them. Dr. Peter was different. He took the time to explain what was going on with Peachy, the treatment options, and prevention strategies. He never pushed for exams or monthly injections, allowing me to make informed decisions based on Peachy’s lifestyle. I don’t have insurance, but St. George is affordable and understanding. You get quality care for the price, and Dr. Peter even does research to find the best treatment for Peachy.

My family (human and animal) and I have had horrible and irreparable experiences with veterinarians that have left us traumatized. We asked a group of animal guardians to recommend a really good veterinarian and they recommended Dr. Peter. My animals are family to me, the only difference is that they are of other species. From the first time we contacted them over the phone, Christen's service was excellent. She listened to me and understood the specific needs of my canine granddaughter. From the first time we went for the consultation and exams, we could see that the well-being of the patient comes first. They really love what they do and in addition to being good professionals, they are good people. You can see and feel the love there. We live in Toronto and have 8 animals. When I couldn't drive to the hospital, I didn't hesitate to take the train and bus to get medicine and food. I was so well received that it was worth the time it took to travel. Another great difference is that they don't cause complications and are not snobbish. If you're not yet proficient in English, that's no problem for them. The patient and their guardian are welcome regardless of their background. Since Dr. Peter and Christen provide in-home care to help meet the needs of patients and their families, I suggest that if you arrive for walk-in consultation, call ahead because you may find the hospital temporarily closed and you may have to wait a while. This is completely understandable because one day your beloved pet may need in-home care. Thank you for everything, Dr. Peter and Christen, you have no idea what a positive impact you have made on me and my family.

I’ve been taking my cats to ST. George animal hospital , and I couldn’t be more pleased with the care they receive. The staff is incredibly professional, kind, and attentive. They always make sure my pets are comfortable during their visits, and all procedures and check-ups have gone smoothly. The vets take the time to explain everything clearly and answer any questions I have. I feel confident that my cats are in excellent hands every time we visit. Highly recommend!
