How to Save Money at Pet Surgery Center of Fort Lauderdale

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Steele and her entire team. I have known Dr. Steele for many years, and throughout that time she has consistently demonstrated an exceptional level of skill, knowledge, and experience in veterinary care. What truly sets Dr. Steele apart is her compassionate approach—not only toward her furry patients but also toward the humans who love them. She treats every animal with genuine kindness and attentiveness, whether it’s a feral cat in need of urgent care or a beloved family pet. In my own experience, she has provided outstanding care for everything from rescued feral cats with injuries to my own dog, always with patience and expertise. Dr. Steele also takes the time to listen. She understands that every pet owner’s situation is unique, and she makes a sincere effort to work within what you can afford while still providing excellent care. That level of empathy and flexibility is rare and deeply appreciated. The staff deserves just as much praise—they are consistently warm, caring, and incredibly helpful. From the moment you walk in, you feel supported and reassured that your pet is in capable and compassionate hands. If you are looking for a veterinary surgeon who combines clinical excellence with heartfelt care, Dr. Steele and her team are truly outstanding. I recommend them without hesitation.

My Pomeranian needed his spleen removed due to a mass his vet found less than a month after I had moved with him across the country from Northern California. I was broke from the move and terrified. The only way to test for cancer in the mass was to get it removed and it's presence posed a big health risk to my small dog who was about to turn 9 years old. Dr. Rachel Steele and her team were beyond helpful and supportive. They worked with me and my dog's vet to ensure his safety and success with the needed procedure. Their pricing was extremely affordable considering the complexity and resources needed for it. As invasive as it is to remove an organ, my dog recovered surprisingly quick and very well. Dr. Steele called me within a week with the lab results. Great news, no cancer! My boy is doing amazing and I am so grateful I put my trust into The Pet Surgery Center of Fort Lauderdale. I recommend their services to everyone I know with a beloved pet/s. I had the best experience I could have asked for and so did my fur baby. Thank you Rachel, what you are doing is absolutely incredible for so many pets and their owners. My Boogie is happy and healthy because of you and your amazing team.

Dr. Steele and team are truly in this for the love of animals. Very affordable and reliable. The care they show is unlike any vet I've ever experienced and I've been to many. I brought in a street cat I'd been feeding that was in a terrible accident and on the verge of dying. I was told by so many places surgeries would be over 5k and not worth it due to the severity of his issues. They were willing to save his life for a quarter of the price. The immense sense of relief they gave me will never be forgotten. Thank you for giving our boy Taco another chance at life!

I have an older pitbull, Blondie, and Dr. Steele has been nothing short of amazing with her. Many veterinarians hesitate to treat her because of her breed, but not Dr. Steele, she treats her with such patience, compassion, and love. She goes above and beyond to make my very nervous girl feel comfortable, even taking her for a short stroll down the block to ease her anxiety. Dr. Steele removed a melanoma from her chest and reassured me every step of the way that my dog would be in the best hands, and she absolutely was. I stayed in the waiting room the entire time, and the staff were so kind and understanding, constantly updating me and reassuring me that my dog, Blondie, was doing great. I’ve never encountered a veterinarian as open, loving, and genuinely kind as Dr. Steele, she’s truly an earth angel. My dog is incredibly lucky to have been under her care, and I’m beyond grateful to the entire staff (Theresa, Arianna, and Camilo) who are equally wonderful. Theresa at the front desk also deserves a special mention for being so compassionate and warm, she’s such a bright presence and she spent plenty of time with me on the phone guiding me and comforting me, allowing me to explain to her what’s been going on with my dog, she didn’t have to do any of that, but she did and I am forever grateful to her. Dr. Steele clearly loves what she does and genuinely cares about animals, it’s not just about money with her, unlike so many other places. Her prices are fair and reasonable, which makes quality care accessible and a lot more stress free. After a lifetime of having dogs and visiting many vets, I can honestly say that Dr. Steele’s skill, knowledge, and compassion stand above all others. I’m so deeply thankful to everyone at Pet Surgery Center for their dedication, kindness, and heartfelt care for both the pets and their owners. That kind of compassion means the world during stressful times. I would recommend Dr. Steele and her amazing team at Pet Surgery Center 100% to anyone whose pet needs surgery or specialized care. They are simply the best!

I came to Pet Surgery Center of Fort Lauderdale for a second opinion about my 11-year-old French Bulldog, who needed a small tumor removed from his mouth for biopsy and also had to get a few teeth extracted. From the very first moment, Dr. Steele was nothing short of amazing. She understood how anxious I was—especially about the anesthesia and the biopsy—and she was incredibly empathetic, caring, and patient. She took the time to explain every single detail of the anesthesia protocol, the procedure itself, and what to expect afterward. Her calm and thorough approach gave me such peace of mind and made me feel confident that I was doing the very best for my dog. The surgery went perfectly, and my pup was able to come home the same day. Dr. Steele provided very detailed discharge instructions and walked me through all possible post-op scenarios—so when anything happened, I already knew what to do and didn’t have to panic. The entire staff was wonderful, but I also have to mention Camillo, who was such a standout! He followed up with me the next day, gave me helpful recovery tips, and made sure we felt completely supported every step of the way. Fast forward 15 days: the biopsy came back benign, and my dog had the best recovery I could have hoped for. I can’t thank Dr. Steele and her team enough for their compassion, professionalism, and incredible care. If you’re looking for a place that truly treats your pet like family, look no further than Pet Surgery Center of Fort Lauderdale. I 1000% recommend them — they deserve every star and more! 🐾💖
