How to Save Money at Animal Cancer Care Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Dr Lyons and the whole staff at ACCC. My cat ended up having 2 rounds of radiation for her nasal tumor here. She is now about 1 year and 8 months post diagnosis and still with me today. I will forever be grateful for the extra time we have been blessed with. Thank you all so much for helping us navigate through this difficult time.

Every other specialist we met or worked with wrote our dog, Atticus, off for dead. They all said the same thing, "this is a very difficult disease. We're going to just manage his comfort and measure his success in days and months rather than years." But it wasn't just what they said, it was what they didn't do. They didn't treat us or our dog Atticus with empathy. They didn't give us any guidance. They acted like we were a nuisance when we called with questions. They deferred us back to our vet or an ER when we had questions -- WHILE THEY WERE OPEN. We understand all of that. We just wanted it to feel like SOMEONE ELSE was with us trying as hard as we were. Animal Cancer Care Clinic is absolutely amazing. Every single person we have come across at this place has been amazing. The great staff at the front desk who guard the world's best treats are amazing. The vet techs that greet and do intake when you arrive while trying to take every last note as if it's going to be the clue that gets you a break out this week is amazing. Whoever the person is that draws the little hearts on your To-Go bag with your take home meds is absolutely amazing. to the Specialists that actually take the time to listen to you you spew all the random tid bits that may or may not have changed this week -- they're amazing. Ours in particular, Dr Lyons -- who stayed late before a vacation he was taking with his wife so that he could have our Dog's scans done in-time so that he could draw up his radiation plans before he left is absolutely amazing. Everyone else talked about this as if our dog, Atticus, was as good as dead. Dr. Lyons is the absolute first that even brought up the low percentage chance that we could kill the tumor and then actually put us on the right path to do so. And now Dr. Fernandez who is managing his Chemo regiment and who consistently listened to every detail of Atticus' life we have shared, treated us with empathy and not like another client in the machine, and given us treatment advice that we felt was not him doing business with us but him guiding us through things that would, and has, genuinely impact our dog's life. Needless to say, Dr. Fernandez is also amazing. Our dog, Atticus is significantly better off today than when we accidentally ended up at Animal Cancer Care Clinic after being neglected by our previous Care Team for 3 months. I'm thankful for everything that they've done for us. It has been completely worth it.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Fernández and the entire team at Animal Cancer Care Clinic. My French Bulldog was treated there for over a year for cutaneous lymphoma, and from day one they were compassionate, patient, and so incredibly loving — not just to her, but to me. Every visit, every tough conversation, every treatment decision was handled with grace and humanity. They never rushed us, always explained options clearly, and helped guide us through some really hard moments. You can tell they truly love what they do and understand the emotional weight of caring for a sick pet. I was consistently blown away by Dr. Fernandez, and to this day I tell everyone that he may be one of the most amazing humans I've ever met. As a (non-vet) physician myself, I can honestly say their level of compassion, communication, and bedside manner is something many in human medicine could learn from. They saw us as a family, not just a case. Every team member, every nurse and the check in staff were all just incredible. I am forever grateful to Dr. Fernández and his team for giving my girl excellent care and for treating her like she was their own...literally to the very end-tears and all. If your pet needs oncology care, there is no better place. Thank you all for helping my family over the course of the past year. You all will be in our hearts along with our Avery, forever.

It’s almost a year since we lost our beloved dog Willy. He was treated for lymphoma by the phenomenal Dr. Fernandez and team at ACCC in Ft. Lauderdale. We can’t express enough how much we will always appreciate and respect Dr. Fernandez for his compassion, empathy, and kindness towards us. From the initial consultation, all the way through every appointment during his chemo protocol, we felt supported emotionally and Willy was treated with love and compassion. Dr. Fernandez always gave us the best treatment and he was honest and patient. Although Willy couldn’t be saved, he was given an extra year with us and for that we are forever grateful. So, THANK YOU ❤️🙏🏻 Michael and Debra Collins

Dr. Maria at the ACCC cared for my dog during one of the most difficult moments of our lives. She treated her with extraordinary skill, patience, and compassion, but what meant the most was how she cared for us as well. Navigating a diagnosis in a beloved dog is overwhelming, and she guided us with clarity, kindness, and genuine empathy. Thanks to her expertise, our dog is now in remission and doing wonderfully. We are profoundly grateful for everything Dr. Maria did for our girl and for the genuine support she gave us throughout the entire journey. We love you, Maria!
