How to Save Money at VCA Market Street Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I switched from another animal hospital to VCA which is closer to my home. I was very pleased with my first visit to establish care. I was able to get a visit within a few days. Dr. Wetzel was fully prepared for the exam even there were at least 25 medical records from other facilities to go through. I was very impressed. I expected to have to explain everything. That was not the case. Dr. Wetzel summarized Max’s treatment history accurately and was already up to speed. This allowed us to focus on next steps and keeping Max healthy and happy. I also opted for the Care Club which I think is well worth it for any dog but especially for a dog that tends to have tummy issues. This way I can bring Max in whenever I need to and not be overly concerned about how much it will cost. I highly recommend these guys.

I'm so happy I switched veterinarians. My baby and I went from only being able to get an emergency walk-in appointment that was only available between 8-11am, where we could only have one issue at a time checked out and then got hit with an emergency services fee at our former vet to getting an actual appointment, same-day, that addressed any and all issues at the same time, with a significantly lower (I'm talking by $100+) bill at the Downtown VCA. Plus, they have a first visit free coupon. The vet and the tech who helped us were so incredibly nice, and gentle, and knowledgeable. The friend the staff were friendly and welcoming, and were even able to still squeeze me in despite me being late. (But please don't be like me. Show up on time to your appointment. It's the right thing to do.) Thank you so much to everyone who helped Hazel. I promise to learn everyone's name during our next visit.

My beloved kitty, Smetana gets his claws trimmed there monthly. They are always so good and love him. It's hard not to. Extra kudos to Jonathan at the desk. From time to time, Smetana is psychotic and hides, necessitating a cancellation. They are always gracious. Love this place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been taking my cat (Bella) here for her regular annual visits for a few years And have always had a pleasant experience. Recently over a weekend I had to take her to an after hours emergency veterinarian after she had stopped eating or drinking water and became very lethargic. That was on a Friday night…come Monday morning, She was still not doing good at all. I called the VCA as soon as they open Monday morning and I relayed My concerns…. Though they did not have any appointments available, I received a call back 30 minutes later, that they would take her for a drop off for observation and treatment. The staff and the doctors were very helpful and communicated well with me. I picked Bella up later in the day after a round of fluids and some additional medication,,.she’s back to her normal self!! The best part is that the doctors will text or call you in the following days to ensure that your furry friend is in good health still!! Dr. Olson is the doctor who helped us this time and we are so appreciative!!

Recently moved to San Diego and found the best vet to help care for my 2 dogs! Great attentiveness and care for our pets, called and was able to get an appointment for my dog the same day. (he's already doing better with some medicine, and it's been under 24hrs!) They have a phone # to call 24/7 that can recommend an emergency clinic nearby if needed for worst case scenarios. We love it here! Panda and Capone are happy to see them.
