How to Save Money at Chemainus Animal Hospital Ltd

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Staff and vets are amazing, they explain everything in great detail and make me feel like my animal is important to them. I would recommend this clinic to anyone. Pricing seems to be on par with the rest of the cowichan valley area.

This clinic used to be fantastic. Front end staff always polite. Dr. Pollock, the clinic owner, is an excellent vet. However, he is missed. It is unclear where he is these days, but he does not seem to see patients. Thus, the clinic relies entirely on locums, and this has resulted in inconsistency in practice and care. Our experience with one locum in particular, and the clinics defence of her poor practice and bedside manner, has led us to leave this clinic. I wish them the best in the future.

This is nowhere to take your pet. A complete revolving door of incompetent staff and in the 6 plus years of being at this clinic haven't seen the same vet twice and I have had many visits. They put my dog on life long allergy medication but want a vet exam before every refill. They wouldn't supply my dog with his medicine for a 6 day period without an exam even though he is seeing a new vet in 6 days. Now my dog is suffering needlessly, he's now limping from licking his feet raw and scratching his ears to the point of bleeding. Horrible experiences here. Do not take your pets here whatever you do!

It's all about the money with this animal hospital. I brought in a puppy at a couple days old. She had aspirated on her mother's milk. She was born 1/2 the size as her siblings. Chemainus animal hospital charged me a arm and a leg compared to other veterinary clinics in my area for scans and xrays. The veterinary doctor advised me to put her down if she was not gaining her % recommend weight daily. I felt this puppy needed more penicillin and they said yes however you would need to spend another huge amount on xrays. I received a phone call later that day from the owner. His quotes were we no longer need your business please move on. He quoted I support my staff members and I myself would have told you to put the puppy down. I would just love to inform everyone that the little girl whom was fighting for her life and I gave her everything from mine to survive she is now taller and heavier than her siblings. She is extremely healthy with no defects she is just about 8 months old. Chemainus animal hospital is not a proper veterinary service please be aware of them.

WOW! Don't do it unless you ask them what they are charging you for! $30 for an ear wash which I thought was included! $105.70 for a $27 30g bottle of Mometamax ear drops. 75% upcharge approx. Disheartening when having a pet ( which mine are all rescues) means getting it without even getting a kiss first! I thought people became vets because the wanted to help animals. Not make it so people can't afford to have them. So just....WOW!
