With all of the dogs (18) that I have had over the years I have never purchased insurance. In June 2016 we purchased our first Bernese Mt. Dog puppy who was 9 weeks old at the time. During our first vet visit, our Doctor recommended that we try Trupanion for their 30-day trial period because with puppies...you never know what can go wrong! Well, we enrolled right after the trial period was over. We opted for the full coverage plus we added extras like hydrotherapy treatments etc., with the anticipation that our Bernese may get arthritis when he is older. We pay a $0 deductible and almost $180 per month. From what I understand, prices not only vary with breeds and age but also vary throughout the country as far as what vets charge etc., We live in NJ so everything seems to be more expensive :( That being said, this past week, our 11 month puppy decided to gulp down one of our baby's bib...one big gulp and I couldn't stick my hand down his throat fast enough to reach it. I tried to induce vomiting but without any luck. I called my vet and Trupanion right away. I told Trupanion my situation and they pre-approved a ballpark amount for the possibility of surgery/vet stay etc., The following day we went to the vet for scans of his stomach etc., There were definitely compacted materials in his stomach so the vet and I discussed options for surgeries. Being the least invasive, I opted to try Endoscopic so that my poor puppy didn't have to be cut open. I had to go to a another vet besides my usual one. This was a special 24hr. vet with specialist so I made the call to Trupanion to tell them that I had to travel to another vet for the surgery etc., and they were updated on all of the info. and I wanted to make sure that everything would still be covered. I should also mention that all of this is going on in the evening and I wound up being at the vet from 5pm to almost 1am and every time I was able to speak with a representative and they were able to get after-hours approval for additional tests etc., The vet ended up pulling out the whole bib plus a couple of my husbands black sport socks (what???) and our puppy is recovering beautifully. I cannot be more thankful for having pet insurance like Trupanion. $180 a month is no small amount of change...and yes, there are definitely some months were I thought "why are we paying for this, we could use that money for something else!". Trupanion is amazing! They have really helped keep my furry-faced children in good care and have never questioned a submission. I never have to worry about the cost of a procedure or test. They allowed me an extra summer with my special little guy (he needed special food, regular visits, and medication) and I will always be grateful.

I have been paying premiums for 6 years. Second claim I put in and second claim rejected. First claim was for dog needing soft tissue surgery. Dog has Addison's disease. Pre existing and this I understand and accept. The surgical wound was slow to heal due to incision being on joint (hip) with a lot of inflammation and infection needing to come out. Dog also ripped incision open and needed staples which further delayed healing. They blamed healing delay on addisons disease and rejected claim. The vet sent them letter disputing the claim stating that the surgical incision healing delay was NOT related to the Addison's disease and they did reimburse. Shouldn't have been needed though. Second claim was for ear infection so bad ear had to be flushed under general anesthesia. I opted to have the dogs teeth cleaned while under. The teeth cleaning is not covered which I understand and accept. The are refusing to reimburse the cost of 177 for the anesthetic and 73 for professional and nursing care. They claim these fees are vet and consult fees. Someone on the phone told me to get a letter from my vet stating what percentage of the anesthetic was related to ear flushing and what percentage was related to teeth cleaning??? This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. They also claim they do not raise premiums as dog ages yet they never forget to raise my annual premiums. This is the worst company. Please research before signing up with them.
