When I took in a shaggy, rough and tumble stray a few years back I never imagined he'd steal my heart the way he has. I also never imagined that he would be so unlucky with his health. Fortunately, I had a gut feeling from the start that I should start a policy for him and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Trupanion has saved my cats life more than once and made the normally tough decisions easy. Claims are processed and paid quickly. They've never not covered anything that they didn't already clearly state wasn't covered (ie: cost of visit, food, etc.) If only people insurance was this good!

12 Years of Trupanion and Counting!
I have been a highly pleased customer of Trupanion for 12 years now. I selected them with a shoulder shrug (no clue which company to choose) and have stayed with them because they are a fantastic company. There are no hidden fees or clauses and nothing contrary to what is advertised.
The 90% reimbursement is great, and there are no catches when it comes to the 90/10 policy. They are not like other pet insurance companies that put limits on how much they will pay per condition. This is big because I have an epileptic dog who also has a chronic infection - not small priced problems.
The vast majority of times, claims are paid timely, I'd say not much more than 2 weeks. Like with any insurance company, there have busy periods and claims may take a bit to be reimbursed. There have been times when I've had to wait more than usual. I won't lie - those times have been inconvenient and frustrating. But those times have not been frequent.
The customer service representatives are friendly, and they care about the pets of customers. Not only that, the company is based on pet love. A staff of more than 100 people can bring their animals to work with them. I have been on the phone with representatives whose dogs have been right by their sides while we talk. That's pretty neat.
I write a lot because Trupanion has been with me through the highs and lowest of lows (pet loss) that come with being a pet parent. They truly are a great company.

Best insurance company, in any capacity!
Trupanion has been there for us continually over the past 5 years. Reps are always kind and helpful. I reccommend that you obtain the lowest deductible that you are able to afford as each visit to the vet may include multiple conditions. It has really paid off for us in the long run.

Overall Exceleent Plan, with minor exceptions....
Excellent plan overall. Bought pet insurance when our dog was >3 months of age, as a "safety net" in event of accidents/illnesses. He is now almost 7 and this plan has literally saved us in excess of $10,000 worth of claims on our dog, who has suffered from ingesting toxic foods/substances, GI issues, underactive thyroid and most recently, a torn CCL/ligament - which cost over $4000 for surgery etc. alone for TTA/TPLO surgery. Petplan has reimbursed us 90% of almost all the costs (with the exception of his rehab/physio bills - due to a prior misdiagnosis by our vet and plan stating this was a "pre-existing condition" and they wouldn't cover rehab portion). Our vet, and ourselves, have appealed this decision and are hopefully awaiting a positive outcome. Premiums don't increase as your pet ages (which is excellent), however, they do not cover the examination fees of your vet visits, which, at $70 per visit, can add up quickly for a pet with long term/chronic care/illnesses. Petplan (our other dogs insurance) - covers ALL costs with annual $100 deductible - so Trupanion - offer this type of plan as an option for those who want that additional coverage (since you can customize your plans). We'd be willing to pay for it. The plan can be costly based on what type of coverage you take (we have zero deductible, 90% unlimited coverage with additional rider for rehab, physio, accupuncture etc) and pay $95 per month. Benefit is you can change/customize your coverage at any time as well. Claims have been promptly paid out and rep's we've spoken to have always been excellent. Overall I'd give them a 9/10 due to lack of them covering examination fees on visits and them occasionally looking for "pre-existing" conditions to not pay out a claim.

Fantastic Pet Insurance Company
My dogs have been covered by Trupanion Pet Insurance for the past several years and I can personally say that they have been outstanding in their coverage and the professionalism of their employees.
Monthly cost varies due to multiple factors including: species, breed, age at enrollment, gender, and postal code.
Coverage
One simple plan covers new injuries and illnesses, hereditary, congenital, and chronic conditions—once the deductible is met, Trupanion pays 90% of the remaining invoice.

Payout Limits
Unlimited lifetime payouts on eligible conditions with no payout limits-ever.
Deductible
You can choose your deductible from $0 – $1000, in $5 increments, to fit your budget.
Trupanion offers a lifetime, per condition deductible meaning that once the deductible is met for an eligible condition, you never have to meet it again. That condition is covered for life. This is great for chronic conditions that can span the entirety of a pet’s life such as allergies or cancer.
Age Limits
All pets under 14 years old can enroll.
Once enrolled, pets stay insured regardless of age.
Waiting Period
Accidents: 5 days
Illnesses: 30 days
Other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.
Exclusions
Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries. That means we don’t cover “predictable” care costs that you can plan ahead for, like:
Examination fees
Wellness and preventive care
Elective, or cosmetic procedures
Sales tax, where applicable
