Do Not Use Them
My Labrador lived to almost 15. We had been with trupanion for 12 years. So many times, during the first ten years I wondered whether it was worth the monthly premium (which, I might add, went up regularly and for no apparent reason), given my girl was very healthy. My vet encouraged me to stick with it, saying you'll need it in her old age. So I did, I stuck with them and paid over 100 bucks a month. THEN when she started to have arthritis Trupanion tried to only pay a percentage of her pain meds, because she had surgery on one of her legs when she was a pup. Pre-existing they claimed. But the same medication helped new arthritic areas as well as the previous injury site, so they tried to only pay a portion of the pain med. It’s not like I could isolate the pain med to go only to the new injury. My vet went to bat for me saying their opinion was beyond ridiculous and we got them to concede but not without a lot it time and effort and aggravation.. Not many vets would write a hard-hitting letter on your behalf, nor take aggravating calls from their vets. Then!!!! They stopped paying for a treatment without warning nor explanation. I paid for insurance coverage for 12 years and expected at the very least the coverage would remain the same – as what I had been paying for. NOPE. So they had covered cold laser treatments for almost a year. Then all of a sudden after I submit for a claim, they simply send a note saying they don’t cover cold laser treatment. I called them thinking it was a mistake. Nope no mistake, they just decided to stop covering her treatments. No notice, no letter explaining, no phone calls – just stopped. I pleaded and appealed many times, saying I stayed with them for exactly this reason... for coverage of treatments I had paid forward for, for almost 12 years. I asked them to grandfather her treatment coverage saying she only had a few months to live and this treatment was really necessary otherwise I would have to put her down.
They were very kind on the phone (good customer service training) but in the end they simply didn’t care. Their slogan, “we got your pet” didn’t seem to matter to an old dog who needed treatment I had paid for, for 12 years. I paid over 10,000 dollars to them and was a long term client. It didn’t matter. I wished I had, as another reviewer suggested, just out 100 bucks in a bank account every month. If I had done that I would have had 14,000 in the bank to pay for whatever treatment I deemed necessary. At least I wouldn’t have cried and pleaded to no avail. I would have been ahead both financially and emotionally. So, no, they don’t have your pets best interest. They simply don’t care. Not worth it. My vet has stopped recommending them. What more can I say? DO NOT USE THEM.
