Better off putting money in savings than paying for pet insurance.
My dog had inflammation in one of his eyes that our regular vet couldn’t find a cause for and kept returning. We were referred to a veterinary ophthalmologist for further assessment and diagnostics. Even though it was a specialist referral and they had to conduct their own tests as part of the assessment, Trupanion would only count this as a normal exam fees so wouldn’t cover it. After deductible, trupanion will cover only the costs of medications and diagnostic testing and we are eligible for a whole 36 cents back! This after spending more than $1400 so far.
The ophthalmologist expects that his eye inflammation is chronic and he likely will need the eye removed within a few years. Knowing he has an impending surgery is the only reason we’re considering continuing our plan. I would not recommend pet insurance for people looking into it and would instead think we would have been better off putting the monthly payments into a savings account to have in case of veterinary emergencies.
We have two large dogs and both have been insured with Trupanion for three years. That’s a lot of money we could have saved had we known we’d run into this. Hindsight is 20:20 (eye pun intended)

A clear and simple process!
The process to submit a claim was clear and simple. I appreciated the updates via email and text that kept me informed on where my claim status was at.

Nifty
Signing up was easy and the person who signed me up was amazing. I’m still reconsidering because the price is extremely high for a dog without preexisting conditions.
Monthly Cost
Monthly cost varies due to multiple factors including: species, breed, age at enrollment, gender, and postal code.
Coverage
One simple plan covers new injuries and illnesses, hereditary, congenital, and chronic conditions—once the deductible is met, Trupanion pays 90% of the remaining invoice.

Payout Limits
Unlimited lifetime payouts on eligible conditions with no payout limits-ever.
Deductible
You can choose your deductible from $0 – $1000, in $5 increments, to fit your budget.
Trupanion offers a lifetime, per condition deductible meaning that once the deductible is met for an eligible condition, you never have to meet it again. That condition is covered for life. This is great for chronic conditions that can span the entirety of a pet’s life such as allergies or cancer.
Age Limits
All pets under 14 years old can enroll.
Once enrolled, pets stay insured regardless of age.
Waiting Period
Accidents: 5 days
Illnesses: 30 days
Other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.
Exclusions
Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries. That means we don’t cover “predictable” care costs that you can plan ahead for, like:
Examination fees
Wellness and preventive care
Elective, or cosmetic procedures
Sales tax, where applicable
