Trupanion "Rocks the Pet World"!

Always top notch excellent service that is handled professionally, expeditiously, effectively and affording the most gratifying business healthcare dealings I have ever experienced. Filing claims are stress free with immediate reimbursement to my checking account - In my opinion, Trupanion "Rocks the Pet World"! Thank you for helping me care for my little boy Bandit!!

It was a breeze and they are very friendly and customer service oriented.

So far so good. We picked up our new puppy and during her first vet visit they detected an issue with her heart. Our breeder had provided 30 days of trupanion for free so we had a cardiologist evaluate her and trupanion covered the tests they did on her. We decided to continue our coverage in case any further issues arise and because trupanion was available, easy to deal with and within a day of submitting the bill we paid $$ was deposited into our bank account. It was a breeze and they are very friendly and customer service oriented.

There Are Better Insurances Out There

Honestly, not great insurance. During initial enrollment you’re told there’s virtually nothing that isn’t covered, and then it turns out later on that many conditions and situations are, in fact, excluded from the policy. For example, the policy only covers a maximum of two months’ worth of prescription food, even if your animal is diagnosed with a chronic digestive condition. Additionally, proactive medications like Sentinel Spectrum are not covered. Also, claims processing is astoundingly slow, so you always wind up paying the entire vet bill out of pocket and then waiting and arguing with Trupanion to cover and/reimburse you on the back end. Also, Trupanion has a horrible habit of refusing to cover new claims under an original diagnosis/condition. For example, if your pet has a chronic skin problem, Trupanion will not consider each vet visit for this lengthy, well-documented problem as the same issue, but rather, a brand new problem each time. So you will basically perpetually pay out of pocket for the ongoing problem. The only reason why I keep the policy at this point is just in case an immense catastrophe happens with my pet, and even then I expect I’ll have to pay the vet bill in full and argue with Trupanion’s claims department for appropriate, timely reimbursement afterwards.

Had to appeal but they came through

They denied my initial claim based on diarrhea being an existing condition which was pretty annoying (since that's a symptom for many things). I had taken my puppy to the vet the first weekend I had him for diarrhea likely caused by the stress of leaving his mom and littermates. Anyhow, my second claim did have diarrhea as a reason I went in but the cause we something completely different and life-threatening. So I was annoyed they denied my claim outright initally—it was jarring. But after my vet followed up with a more detailed explanation of the situation Trupanion paid the claim. So I'm happy that they paid and the review process wasn't especially difficult or time-consuming. It's a bit of a drag I had to appeal though. But, again, ultimately they came through. And the amount paid wasn't trivial.

Monthly Cost

Your monthly premium is determined by multiple factors including your pet’s species, gender, breed, age, zip code, and the deductible amount you choose if your policy allows.

Coverage

Depending on your plan, the Trupanion policy pays up to 100% of your vet bill for all eligible expenses. There are unlimited payout limits, always and Trupanion will never increase or cancel your coverage because of claims you submit. Coverage includes new accidents and illnesses, hereditary, congenital, and chronic conditions, diagnostic tests, hospital stays, and much more. Trupanion prides itself on paying out more on the dollar than any other provider and has paid out nearly $2 billion in claims to date.

Payout Limits

The Trupanion policy* has no payout limits, so whether your pet needs one quick visit or a lifetime of care, your coverage won’t quit. That can mean a big difference if your pet develops a chronic condition requiring extended care like allergies, diabetes, or even cancer.

Deductible

If your Trupanion policy has a deductible, you can customize it to fit your budget. You can choose from $50 to $1,000 in increments of $5, or choose to have no deductible at all. Trupanion deductibles are per-condition and good for the life of your pet. That means no annual resets-once a deductible is met, you never have to pay the deductible for that condition again.

Age Limits

All new pets can enroll from birth until their 14th birthday. Once your pet is enrolled, they can be enrolled for life

Waiting Period

Waiting periods vary by state. Please see your states policy for full coverage details. However, other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.

Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries.
