Pets can be full of surprises-so their insurance coverage shouldn’t be. That’s why Trupanion is dedicated to helping pets we love get the care they need. They’ve been around for more than 20 years, making them experts and setting standards for the industry. One perk of this, and what they pride themselves on, is the amount they pay out to pet owners for each claim. Paying out more on the dollar than any other pet insurance provider. To date they have paid out $2 Billion in claims and have insured nearly 1 million pets. Trupanion pets lead longer happier lives.1 Pets insured with Trupanion lived longer than pets without Trupanion because pet parents didn’t have to worry about the cost of the care their pet needed. Depending on the plan Trupanion covers up to 90% of eligible expenses, has unlimited payouts-always, and can pay your vet bill, within seconds, at time of checkout, so all you pay is your portion (anything not covered by Trupanion). They have transformed the way pet insurance handles claims by eliminating the reimbursement process. To put it simply, there is a reason why 98.7% of Trupanion members stay enrolled every month. 1 Based on a November 2020 internal study analyzing third party hospital claims data comparing pets insured with a Trupanion policy to pets without a Trupanion policy. * Terms and Conditions apply. Policy details vary by state, please review your states policy for full coverage details. Not all veterinarians accept direct payment. Ask your veterinarian about Trupanion Vet Direct Pay. Trupanion has been there for me and my pup through 9 years of health issues!

It makes me sad to read the negative reviews about this company. I have a 9YO German Shepherd that has gone through pneumonia at 2YO that resulted in a very expensive 6 day stay in ICU at Tufts Animal Hospital in MA. In addition, she was diagnosed with spinal arthritis at 2 1/2 YO which has resulted in ongoing prescription expenses. Recently, she tore her cruciate ligament and just had TPLO surgery yesterday for which she received a pre-approval for that covers 90% of her surgery. Trupanion has covered everything they promised - and frankly, they have reimbursed me more than I’ve ever paid them in 9 years of premiums. As they state, rates go up and down (I’ve seen both) based on the industry, which is completely understandable given the coverage they offer. I understand that my situation is probably extreme, but that is what insurance is for - the unexpected high expense illnesses and injuries that for uninsured dogs could mean the difference between a chance at treatment and recovery or loss of life because of an unexpected financial burden their person couldn’t afford. I also have a 4YO Pittie mix that is also covered. Thankfully, I have not had any claims for him thus far and hope I never do. But I have zero qualms about paying Trupanion for the piece of mind they give me knowing my dogs can get the best treatment available without having to make the difficult decisions finance can force. In regards to claim processing time - the longest I have ever had to wait for reimbursement was 2 weeks. More often than not I receive reimbursement within 1 week. I highly recommend this company to everyone that is looking for the best coverage with the best staff.

This company is horrible

This company is horrible. I was completely misled. This company increases the cost and not by just a few dollars each year. I would suggest you shop for a company that is honest up front so you can determine your needs. Do not buy the insurance when you have a puppy thinking that you are going to save money in the long run with the same monthly cost. Wait until your dog is older and might then need the insurance. The support team was horrible as well over the phone, condesencing and talks over you. Very unprofessional with that annoying, cringy customer service insincere approach. Go anywhere else but do it as your dog gets older, and double check any ins. company policy, not just what they tell you.

Owning Pets Your Entire Life

With the Vet costs of today, monthly cost, spreads out what one day may be thousands. Wish the upfront information would have included the no long-term obligation, I had to make a request for.

Don’t waste your money with this…

Don’t waste your money with this company! I paid premiums for years on several of my Goldens and referred a ton of my clients to them. Never filed a claim unless it was for something major. They used to cover almost everything and were prompt to reimburse. Not any more. They barely covered half of his ER visit and nothing g for his cremation and took forever to process the claim. Will never use or recommend ever again.

Rate Information Transparency

First let me say, that I have been a Trupanion customer for 13 years. You have been very responsive and fast to pay out my claims. The platform is easy to use and easy to navigate. For the past 13 years I have been an evanglist for Trupanion, recommending you to any dog owner I would meet. That ended today. I called the 1800 number to contest a claim, and was given clear next steps, and I was appreciative, the team member I had was very helpful. When the call started I realized that I had not updated our address and asked if we could do that on the call. Once your team member did update my address, she informed me that my rate was much lower then I was notified it was set to be. At first I thought she made an error, then I was appreciative, because I didn't realize that my rate had anything to do with where I lived. When I asked to appeal for over paying for the past 18 months, the team member mentioned that there is nothing they could do. I let it go, but then while I was on hold I looked back at my claim history and recognized that starting May of 2023 I began taking tucker to my new Vet several 100 Miles away from where I had gone traditionally. I find it hard to believe that there is no system in place that flags a sudden and consistent change of address. There was no curtesy notice, that a change of address could effect my rate. I'm curious if I took Tucker to a more expensive market for a year would Trupanion do more to reach out to me about whether I moved and why I was going to a different vet? When I came off of hold to complete the conversation on my intial claim question, I asked again who I can talk to about appealing my over payment for at least the last year. The team member mentioned there is nothing anyone can do, as it was my responsibility to update my address. I do concede that point. However my argument is that more could have been done by Trupanion to ensure my information was up to date. Had I moved from New Hampshire to New York and taken Tucker to a New York Vet, would you have been more persistent? I am very disappointed that more wasn't done to contact me about my potential savings. I feel like this is a failure of your customer service. I want to be transparent, that you have not lost me as a customer, but you have lost me as an evangelist. I will no longer recommend you to anyone I know. For what it's worth My wife and I moved into a pet friendly, 90 unit apartment building, many of which have one or more pet(s). My recommendation is that you examine your efforts to make sure that profiles are up to date. I would also recommend that you have a policy in place, where if a Customer can verify a change of address there be some sort of rebate or discount afforded thier account. I hope this review is taken seriously as I don't want my experience to happen to anyone else.

Monthly Cost

Your monthly premium is determined by multiple factors including your pet’s species, gender, breed, age, zip code, and the deductible amount you choose if your policy allows.

Coverage

Depending on your plan, the Trupanion policy pays up to 100% of your vet bill for all eligible expenses. There are unlimited payout limits, always and Trupanion will never increase or cancel your coverage because of claims you submit. Coverage includes new accidents and illnesses, hereditary, congenital, and chronic conditions, diagnostic tests, hospital stays, and much more. Trupanion prides itself on paying out more on the dollar than any other provider and has paid out nearly $2 billion in claims to date.

Payout Limits

The Trupanion policy* has no payout limits, so whether your pet needs one quick visit or a lifetime of care, your coverage won’t quit. That can mean a big difference if your pet develops a chronic condition requiring extended care like allergies, diabetes, or even cancer.

Deductible

If your Trupanion policy has a deductible, you can customize it to fit your budget. You can choose from $50 to $1,000 in increments of $5, or choose to have no deductible at all. Trupanion deductibles are per-condition and good for the life of your pet. That means no annual resets-once a deductible is met, you never have to pay the deductible for that condition again.

Age Limits

All new pets can enroll from birth until their 14th birthday. Once your pet is enrolled, they can be enrolled for life

Waiting Period

Waiting periods vary by state. Please see your states policy for full coverage details. However, other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.

Exclusions

That means we don’t cover “predictable” care costs that you can plan ahead for, like: Examination fees Wellness and preventive care Elective, or cosmetic procedures Sales tax, where applicable Like many other pet insurance providers, Trupanion does not cover pre-existing conditions.
