Vet Visit Review: The "Do Whatever It Takes" Edition

Walking into the vet with pet insurance is like strolling into a fancy restaurant with a gift card that covers the whole menu. Suddenly, every option is on the table, and you're not sweating over the cost of the "premium filet." Normally, vet visits with Lola would include a pre-visit pep talk: *“Okay, Lola, no extra tests today, just the essentials. Be cool.”* But with pet insurance? Oh, it’s game time. The conversation changes from *“What’s the cheapest option?”* to *“Do whatever you need to, doc!”* Lola, of course, eats it up. Extra tests? Sure. Extra belly rubs from techs? Absolutely. She even gets her own little VIP treatment, trotting out of the exam room with her tail wagging like she's just returned from a spa day. Meanwhile, I’m grinning ear to ear knowing my wallet isn’t taking the hit. The best part? That peace of mind. No calculating what I can afford to skip; no guilty *"maybe next time"* for something important. Just the simple relief of knowing Lola is taken care of, top to tail (or in her case, wiggly butt). Pet insurance is the ultimate "treat yourself" for responsible pet parenting. Lola approves, I approve, and the vet probably approves too, given my new-found enthusiasm for diagnostics. Would recommend. 10/10.

Do your research, it's probably not worth it

Their staff is wonderful and kind. But this is an insurance company set on making profits and beware-their process is difficult, unintuitive and there are many things they actually don't cover. They reject as much as they actually cover. Their deductible is per condition. A disappointing company to work with like many other insurance companies.

New Policy

I had my State Farm Insurance Agent setup my account based on the quote they provided me. The information that was setup on the website was incorrect, and had to be corrected. They setup the account on the 13th of the month and today is the 17th and the information on the site has still not been setup correctly. I have followed up with Trupanion three times to get all of the corrections updated and they said it would take about 5 days to get all of the corrections done.

Trap

They want your money but don’t want to pay out anything, it honestly feels like a scam. As soon as a better option becomes available in the market, I encourage everyone to switch.

Trupanion looks back at Vet records…

Trupanion looks back at Vet records from when you first got the dog to now. If your dog ever had a cough or a runny nose, then they don’t cover anything in the future that may have a cough or runny nose as a symptom. If your dog ever sprained or bruised their leg, then forget being covered if they rupture or break a bone or ligament. If your dog has ever had no appetite or been on a prescription diet, then any symptom that may include that is not covered. The list of what they want cover based on a dog that’s 10 years old from a time when she was three months old is ridiculous. They nitpick over your records to ensure that you get the least amount of claims possible.

Monthly Cost

Your monthly premium is determined by multiple factors including your pet’s species, gender, breed, age, zip code, and the deductible amount you choose if your policy allows.

Coverage

Depending on your plan, the Trupanion policy pays up to 100% of your vet bill for all eligible expenses. There are unlimited payout limits, always and Trupanion will never increase or cancel your coverage because of claims you submit. Coverage includes new accidents and illnesses, hereditary, congenital, and chronic conditions, diagnostic tests, hospital stays, and much more. Trupanion prides itself on paying out more on the dollar than any other provider and has paid out nearly $2 billion in claims to date.

Payout Limits

The Trupanion policy* has no payout limits, so whether your pet needs one quick visit or a lifetime of care, your coverage won’t quit. That can mean a big difference if your pet develops a chronic condition requiring extended care like allergies, diabetes, or even cancer.

Deductible

If your Trupanion policy has a deductible, you can customize it to fit your budget. You can choose from $50 to $1,000 in increments of $5, or choose to have no deductible at all. Trupanion deductibles are per-condition and good for the life of your pet. That means no annual resets-once a deductible is met, you never have to pay the deductible for that condition again.

Age Limits

All new pets can enroll from birth until their 14th birthday. Once your pet is enrolled, they can be enrolled for life

Waiting Period

Waiting periods vary by state. Please see your states policy for full coverage details. However, other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.

Exclusions

Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries.
