Total rip-off
I would give Trupanion a negative-five stars if that was available. A total scam. I have paid in $12,000 and when I finally brought my dog in for the first ever time for a leg injury, they would only pay $321.97 of a $1,283.30 emergency vet bill, thereby leaving me to pay $961.33.
Their reasoning? First a $500 deduction on EACH visit for a new "ailment", not the annual onetime $500 deductible that is common for health and prescription coverage, which I could have accepted. They would also not cover the emergency exam, nor the resultant prescription (because it was not a "category" they choose pay for).
After so many years of paying them, I immediately canceled...

This type of pet insurance makes no sense!
This type of pet insurance simply makes no sense. The ONLY way this is relevant is if your pet gets into a serious accident or has a chronic condition that requires extensive medical procedures.
Anything else is not covered or will never hit your deductible. They have a deductible PER CONDITION. 99% of conditions happen once (e.g. ER visit, giardia, diarrhea, upper respiratory infection, etc.). Even if that SAME EXACT CONDITION happens again, it's "unrelated to the first time" so it will be applied to a NEW deductible.
This makes NO SENSE AT ALL. It's honestly a confusing scam because you'll pay a monthly fee, pay all your pet's medical bills forever, and almost certainly will never get a payout. I'm constantly racking up new deductibles as a condition arises. Soon I'm probably going to have 15-20 separate $1,000 deductibles each with $250-800 out of pocket payments and never once hit any deductible limit!

We have been clients of Trupanion for 16 years. They were once a very reliable and fair insurance provider for animal companions.
Please take my advice and do not insure your animal companion with this company.
They claim that you will have peace of mind. I can tell you that is not true. We’ve had several dogs on our policy and I can tell you that you will be holding your breath hoping they cover an illness or injury every single time that you submit a claim.
Every time your dog or cat is diagnosed or you have and unexpected medical emergency you will be stressed out wondering if they are going to find a way to deny coverage.
That is a promise!!
They do not directly pay most veterinarians. Very few major animal hospitals have the trupanion software to process a claim on the spot.
This company is deceptive in so many ways I can not list them all. Please read through these reviews and you will see what I mean.
Also go to the BBB website and read through the pages and pages of complaints filed against this company.
They are now raising rates every year just after the birthdate of your animal.
We have two toy sized dogs ( under 20 pounds) and they have raised their rates by 33%. Our puppy just turned a year and within a week her rate went from $65 to $84.00 a month.
Two years in a row they’ve raised our Maltese’ rates in the beginning of June.
His birthday is in May.
These rates are almost the same as our large breed purebred dogs that have now passed.
This past July we lost our 15.5 year old black lab. She had trupanion coverage since she was 8 weeks. Trupanion basically denied any claim we made for her until she was diagnosed with lymphoma in June. Our veterinarian pushed for us to do chemotherapy but we did not want to put her through that at her age.
We did palliative care. We lost our special girl July 9. Trupanion refused to cover the sedative that is given to your dog to make them very sleepy before the injection that stops their heart beat.
The people deciding what’s covered and what’s not at this company are proof that monsters exist on this earth.
Again we’ve been with this company since 2008 please take my advice and pick a different insurance company to protect your beloved animal companion.
We’ve paid in at least $75,000 in premiums over the years and our estimate of what we were reimbursed during that time, we had several dogs on our policy is about $13,000. That pay out was basically for three of our dogs that were diagnosed with major illnesses and did not survive for very long.
We will most likely have to cancel our coverage with trupanion.
We are in negotiations with a few other companies presently for our one year old 14 pound mini golden doodle.
Monthly Cost
Your monthly premium is determined by multiple factors including your pet’s species, gender, breed, age, zip code, and the deductible amount you choose if your policy allows.
Coverage
Depending on your plan, the Trupanion policy pays up to 100% of your vet bill for all eligible expenses. There are unlimited payout limits, always and Trupanion will never increase or cancel your coverage because of claims you submit. Coverage includes new accidents and illnesses, hereditary, congenital, and chronic conditions, diagnostic tests, hospital stays, and much more. Trupanion prides itself on paying out more on the dollar than any other provider and has paid out nearly $2 billion in claims to date.
Payout Limits
The Trupanion policy* has no payout limits, so whether your pet needs one quick visit or a lifetime of care, your coverage won’t quit.
That can mean a big difference if your pet develops a chronic condition requiring extended care like allergies, diabetes, or even cancer.
Deductible
If your Trupanion policy has a deductible, you can customize it to fit your budget. You can choose from $50 to $1,000 in increments of $5, or choose to have no deductible at all. Trupanion deductibles are per-condition and good for the life of your pet. That means no annual resets-once a deductible is met, you never have to pay the deductible for that condition again.
Age Limits
All new pets can enroll from birth until their 14th birthday. Once your pet is enrolled, they can be enrolled for life

Waiting periods vary by state. Please see your states policy for full coverage details.
However, other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.
Exclusions
Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries. That means we don’t cover “predictable” care costs that you can plan ahead for, like:
Examination fees
Wellness and preventive care
Elective, or cosmetic procedures
Sales tax, where applicable
Like many other pet insurance providers, Trupanion does not cover pre-existing conditions. Whichever insurer you choose, it pays to enroll early!
