Trupanion | Pet Insurance Review

In May 2020 I adopted two 10 week old Schnauzer puppies. Unfortunately they were both sick and we were at the Vet's office every few days for months. I knew then that I wanted to get health insurance for them because Vet bills can get expensive. So, in the year 2021 I did purchase health insurance on both my Schnauzers. Approximately two months later Otis got very sick. He was vomiting a lot and just didn't feel well. The vomiting got so bad I had to take him to an Emergency Clinic. They did bloodwork, x-rays and loaded him up on IV fluids under the skin of his neck so that he would not get dehydrated. They also sent him home with some medications and some Hill's Science Diet Gastrointestinal food. The cost shocked me because it was over $670.00. The next day Otis was still sick and not feeling well but I decided to see if maybe he would be able to go to his own vet the next day since there was not a doctor there at that specific time. He was sick and vomiting that day and into the night and I stayed up with him all night. The next day I called my vet and made an appointment. Although my vet didn't run any more bloodwork he did repeat the x-rays, rehydrated him with the IV fluids underneath the skin of his neck and sent him home with some Cerenia for nausea. Otis was diagnosed with a stomach virus. My vet charged me over $300.00. For Otis though he is covered 80% so we got 80% of what I spent back. I have since gotten health insurance for my Poodle mix also, although she is only covered for 75%. Schnauzers are notorious for having illnesses so I wanted a little bit more coverage for them. When Otis first got sick I contacted Trupanion to alert them that I was going to have to take him to the Emergency Clinic. They were awesome. I sent them all the paperwork and in approximately two and a half to three weeks I received a check for the reimbursement. You can decide to have your vet paid right up front instead of waiting for a reimbursement. I declined to do that. You can also have that money sent directly to your bank account and we will be making arrangements for that procedure very soon. Trupanion has given both my husband and I peace of mind because we can tackle whatever lies ahead for us and our babies because we know we are not in this alone and we know we have help paying for whatever comes next and when we are at peace our household is at peace and it feels so great to not have that constant worry that something may happen that we can not afford to pay for.

Kodi is starting to walk again after his knee surgery and having this insurance allowed us to keep him going into his "retirement" years.

Trupanion is True to its word and is a companion to the owner of the pet, making sure the pet is comfortable and gets all the help from vets, hospitals and care. My 14yr old Yorkie has gastrointestinal issues, and kidney failure, Trupanion paid ALL the bills and are continuing to pay for her treatment as she needs. I know she has not much life to live now but Trupanion takes away the financial stress from me that I can at least do the best for her while she is with me. :)
