Used to be something different/better
Nationwide used to be amazing- I had heard horror stories of pet insurance from clients (used to work at a vet practice) so I was nervous to get it, but I signed up my Irish Wolfhound as a puppy. It was great. He was on the Wellness Plus which was a $250/annual deductible with up to 90% back. I never had any issues submitting claims/getting money back. Now, three years later, it's like a totally different company. Claims take forever- I'd say at least 1/2 of my claims are denied and I have to resubmit just to have them approved that time (doubling my wait times for reimbursement)- customer service has really gone downhill and while they claim to not raise your rates due to illness, my wolfhound went from like $85/month the first year to $125/month the next year and we're at a whopping $145/month on year three. When I asked why he's gone up so much, no one would tell me. I would've respected them much more if they said he had "x" happen so that had to raise rates, but they just give the same line of "well, prices fluctuate based on market" etc. Of course now I can't take him off because he would have a pre-existing condition with any other insurance, so I'm stuck. To give you some idea of what it's like to enroll a new pet with this new Nationwide, I tried to get my newly adopted mastiff onto their wellness plus plan about 6 months ago (he is 2 years old) and he was denied due to 'pre-existing condition'. I was shocked & asked to speak to someone, as he doesn't have any medical issues to my knowledge, as his owner. Well he was denied for, and I cannot believe it either... ache. My dog has chin acne because of how heavy his head is and the little hairs on his chin get impacted sometimes... which isn't uncommon with this breed and is not a 'medical condition'. I asked to speak to a vet on staff or have my vet call in to speak to someone to explain, as this had to just be some misunderstanding and was shut down. I was shocked. Just beware with Nationwide now. It used to be such a good company but it has changed a lot.
