Nationwide | Pet Insurance Review

I have had Nationwide for going on 3 years. Pet insurance, because it's insurance & by it's very nature, is a risk, right? You think you should probably have it, but then you could go years without using it, so you wonder... Well, let me tell you. HAVE. IT. GET IT. We consider ourselves excellent pet owners - check-ups as needed, great quality dog food & treats - the list goes on & on - our animals are our kids. The first year or so, we didn't have any claims except wellness & I was thinking, "Hmmm. Do I really need to keep paying for this?" We lost one of our beloved babies, & made the decision to get another one - a young one - thinking he would be healthy & easy for years. We were wrong. This past year, we learned he has allergies & thanks to having Nationwide, he got to go to an allergist to get those taken care of. I don't know that we would have made that decision so easily without insurance as it was expensive. And our other dog who has never really had any big issues, thankfully, needed a root canal! Again - not inexpensive & had we not had insurance, we would've opted for them pulling her tooth, which would have been more stressful on her & possibly had complications due to the tooth it was, but because we had insurance, we could do the best thing for her. I am so grateful for Nationwide - I always want to take the best care of our 2 dogs & 2 cats & having this insurance - I can without such huge sacrifices or going into debt. I talked to my vet years ago about pet insurance, & he said basically as good as a customer as I've been for so many years & as good care as I take of my animals, if they ever needed anything, they would always work with me on payment options, etc. I thought that was so nice & really appreciated it, but went with my gut & got the insurance. The root canal & the allergies were not with my vet, & neither are emergency visits, so that wouldn't have helped me this year. Nationwide did. If your animals are your babies & you want the very best for them, GET INSURANCE! Thank you, Nationwide, for really being there for us this year!!

My only complaint is the length of time it takes to process a claim. I have to lay out the money and very often go back for a recheck or get more meds before anything is repaid. I have one claim now that was missing a diagnosis originally for one item and when my vet returned it to claims it has still not been taken care of. Notices are always late in coming too that a claim has been received. If that response time could be fixed, it would be excellent all way around.
