Read the Contracts, then Pick FIGO

I am extremely analytical in nature. I probably studied the details of pet insurance for 40-50 man hours (also putting it against just saving money in a savings account) before deciding to go with FIGO. If you narrow it down to the top 2 or 3 and compare their coverage, it's easy to see that FIGO covers quite a bit more with fewer exclusions. Anyway, on to my personal story: my "boys" two English Bulldogs, 1 and under 1 have not had great luck. The youngest got pneumonia, racked up a 1900 between the emergency vet and regular vet within the second month of having FIGO. I held my breath because I had read so many awful reviews online of other companies but they were truly wonderful and I totally trust them now after repeated positive experiences. I wish their hadn't been so many claims this first year but I'm chalking it up to the puppy stages with these guys.

Very Upset

When we picked up my dog he was healthy and happy. We immediately submitted a VET check sheet for FIGO's record. I signed up for FIGO the day I picked him up (9/18/16). I also submitted a VET CHECK from the Breeder from 9/9/16 stating he was healthy 2 weeks before we got him. Unfortunately 3 days after we picked him up he caught some kennel cough/pneumonia. As this was during the waiting period we did not expect it to be covered and were slammed with a hefty bill from the hospital. He was recovering but then ate some type of toy fur on Friday (9/23/16) and aspirated vomit into his lung. We took him to the vet and he was confident that FIGO would cover this as an accident as a dog throwing up and creating aspiration pneumonia is an accident. FIGO did not cover the aspiration pneumonia and we are extremely upset. They did not even offer to reimburse a portion of it. I am confident going forward they will help us if an emergency arises.

It's the small things that count!

Figo has been great so far. My dog Marty had a bad case of GI issues and they sent him a personalized card in the mail hoping he was feeling better. It was such a nice touch. I think these small gestures really go a long way. He is feeling better now and his claim was processed very quickly!

Great start with Figo

Buckle up; this is a long one.Some years ago, we considered insurance coverage for our dog, but opted at the time not to purchase because it didn't make sense from a value standpoint, most particularly because the plans available then only seemed to pay what they felt like paying (a.k.a. usual and customary rates). More recently, with two dogs now, we felt it worth re-investigating the state of the offerings, and were happy to find that there are some more reasonable choices now. I'm posting here because a) I find value in what we discovered, and b) the concept of insurance works best when the risk is spread across many participants. Primary factors in our having chosen Figo -- even though they don't offer bovine coverage (that's cows, btw), which is fine because we don't have any of those: - Payment based on vet bill (vs usual and customary), reasoning is self explanatory; - Annual deductable (vs per incident), reasoning is that you don't want to start the clock over for each separate incident, and premiums should be lower with a per incident deductable, but they don’t seem to be; - Inclusion of exam fee (vs NOT), reasoning, it is part of the spend, so why don't others count this?! - Alternative treatments are covered (though I’m not expecting to use any); - No maximum lifetime payout; - Option to have no maximum annual payout (thought this option costs a little more); - Reasonable premium (competitive, relative to at-best comparable plans from other providers). Figo is new, so with that comes some newer thinking around old product. Namely, they’ve got a modernized wrapper around the claims filing process and document management -- all online via the pet cloud. I initially pooh pooh’d that, since it is just a set of online folders (is it for us or for them?), but having records all organized online is turning out to be nice, compared to paper folders in my file cabinet. And while we are relatively new customers, we’ve had positive experience so far. They’ve been accessible and responsive to suggestions; our first claim was processed (toward deductable) quickly and painlessly, and our patient got a nice get well card in the mail. We really purchased this for anything major that might come along, so we're happy with the peace of mind at a reasonable price. I'm giving Figo a rating of 10 so it gets placed where it should in the rankings, which are otherwise inflated. (There is always room for improvement, so nobody should really be gett

Coverage

You choose a reimbursement level of 70%, 80%, 90% or 100% after your deductible.

The pay-out amount is based on your actual vet bill.

Payout Limits

Annual limit of $5,000, $10,000 or unlimited depending on your chosen plan.

Deductible

$100, $250, $500, $750, $1,000 or $1,500 annually. Deductibles offered depend on pet’s age and location.

Age Limits

Must be 8 weeks or older to enroll. No upper age limits apply.

Waiting Period

1-day for accidents, 14 days for illnesses, 6 months for hip dysplasia and orthopedic conditions. (Both hip dysplasia and orthopedic condition waiting periods can be waived by having exam/waiver form completed by veterinarian)

Exclusions

  • Curable pre-existing conditions may be eligible for coverage if symptom free for 12 months
  • Conditions arising from a repetitive and specific activity, eg. Ingestion foreign object, ear infection caused by water, snake bites, etc. – excluded after 3 occurrences
