How to Save Money at Underdog Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Underdog Veterinary Services is such a blessing to our community. Critters can’t help the fact that their humans become homeless or have other financial problems. They need to be cared for and have their health concerns addressed. Underdog is there filling the void. Thank you to everyone who volunteers and blessings to those who have chosen this as work. I don’t know if other clinics have more pay but you chose this and there are so many people who couldn’t afford care however you are there for us.

They are fabulous. They performed my cat's surgery for quite a bit less than my regular vet would have. Customer service is fantastic too. Highly recommend!

I CAN NOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT HOW WONDERFUL THIS VISIT WAS! My 14yo dachshund had gotten ahold of some cooked pork fat. It gave him unrelenting diarrhea. He wasn't getting better and my wife and I were very concerned. Then last night he started to pass blood. We were worried sick since he is the absolute best good boy and has been with us almost 1 1/2 decades. I had been calling vets yesterday before he was passing blood but no one could get him in. One vet told me to check out Underdog. I called around 8:30 am and had my call answered right away by a very kind and empathetic young person named Savannah. She listened to my concerns and I let her know that my finances were very tight. She asked if I would mind if she called me back because she wanted to give me the best information. I said sure and 5 minutes later she called me back with the most likely course of action and pricing information as well as asking if I could come down there right away. I got my sickly little man loaded up and was on my way. Savanna met us at the door, took his weight, and lead us straight to a room. We waited about 5 minutes and the vet tech came in. She was also super kind and supportive. She helped put us at ease. About 5 minutes later the doctor entered. Yet again, kind, empathetic, and carried herself with a confidence and approachable personality. She welcomed my questions and eased my fears. We then discussed course of treatment. She let me know that vets typically recommend a blood test to zero in on a diagnosis but given that we had clear causation between the pork fat and both my dogs having GI issues that she could forgo the test and treat my little guy for his symptoms. I expressed concern as I have a very tight budget but I could not live with myself if I didn't do absolutely everything to ensure his wellbeing. She again set my mind at ease and let me know that if we don't have success with his treatment then we would likely need to do a blood test. They took my little boy and injected fluids and nausea meds. They brought him back with meds to go home. He was already acting a little more peppy. I went to Savannah to settle up and my bill was less than $200. From my first phonecall to the moment we left every aspect of this experience was as good as it could be. Everyone was so kind and showed true concern for my guy. They were also very respectful and reassuring for me. I moved here not long ago and I think I've found my new vet. I can't recommend them enough. Do your furry friend a kindness and let Underdog help them in times of need. THANK YOU SO MUCH TO THE WHOLE STAFF!

I’ve been with this clinic for a few years now and I couldn’t be happier. The care they provide is top of the line, from the front desk staff, Vet Assistants to the Vets themselves. At their new location they have parking!! In their own lot!!! It’s clear the people work as a team and actually enjoy what they do. Each and every person has been friendly, caring, and professional. Most importantly, my animals like them too!
