How to Save Money at Underdog Pet Rescue and Vet Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Wow! These "vet" really need to stick to adoption and flea checks. Brought in out 10 year old pug. Said they took xrays but wouldn't show us? They said she has a uti and prescribed a 10 day of course of antibiotics. She was getting better and took her in now the "vets" say now it's heart failure!? No blood tests taken, NOTHING! THEY PERSCRIBE HER HEART FAILURE MEDS WITH NO BLOOD TEST OR NOTHING! DR. Brie was VERY RUDE! DOCTOR LENORA HAS BEEN THE DOCTOR! GOING TO CONTACT A FAMILY MEMBER IN THE SENATE ABOUT HOW BAD THIS PLACE REALLY IS!! DAMN NEAR KILLED MY PUG PUTTING HER ON UNESSACARY MEDS! Then go back today and was treated very unfairly by the staff! You lie about ME yelling. Your trying to save face! I got video of the whole deal and I will be going to Channel 3 , 27, 15, and the Wisconsin State Journal! Also, figuring out ways to scam for grants. Shawn Johnson Edit: Yes I got response. Listen, you can ask your front staff, I went out to make a work phone call which took exactly 43 min 15 seconds. I knew nothing that was said. Then Dr. BRI" comes in with a serious attitude. Already fired up from what the tech had told her I assume once again was not there. This is my 63 year old aunts best friend/service animal for 11 years! How your doctor handled the situation was unprofessional. She would stop the conversation, but had degrading comments which my grammar is extensive so I was picking up what she was putting down. We can sit here all day, but at the end of the day Molly gets hurt! Your doctor didn't put the animal first, I would have had Cindy leave. But like I said the words Dr. Brie was firing off was only fueling the fire. Molly suffers! Sad really, but you sleep well with the sideways you pull. I have already notified the proper channels for giving expired meds to Molly. I know trying to help right. Also, please do not lie, I never raised my voice. The bottom line is and the new vet concurred YOUR OFFICE MISDIGNOSED MY PUG, HER HEART IS A LITTLE ENLARGED BUT NOT NEAR ENOUGH TO START HER ON THOSE "OUT OF THIS WORLD DOSES" AS THE NEW VET PUT IT. SHE HAS PNEUMONIA! JUST PLEASE STICK TO YOUR SPAYING AND NUETERING, BEFORE YOU CERTIFICATE "VETS" DO KILL SOMEONES BELOVED ANIMAL! YOU ALL HANDLED THE SITUATION VERY POORLY! THE WORST PART IS YOU KNOW IT, SO YOU COME OUT WITH OUTLANDISH COMMENTS AFTER I LEFT A REVIEW! Happy Holidays, SJ

I had a great experience with Underdog when adopting our kitty, Dave. The process was thorough, yet not unreasonable. The foster mom, Shelley, was fantastic and helpful. She truly cared about getting us the right kitten since we have a puppy, as well. I would definitely recommend this organization if you are looking to adopt.

I applied to adopt in summer 2025. My application was approved, but the adoption coordinator attempted to walk back the approval after my apartment complex informed her that they charge a one-time pet deposit, monthly pet rent, and require resident pets participate in PooPrints (all of which seem standard for nicer pet-friendly complexes in the area). It left a poor taste in my mouth to see a rescue prevent a possible adoption due to what they saw as high fees (ones that seemed average to me, the adopter, and ones I was willing to pay). It’s an unfortunate commonality to see shelters let perfect be the enemy of good, and set partial standards for adopters that only stall successful adoptions. It seems Underdog falls in this camp. I’m sure a dog would rather be pulled from a kill shelter to have an 8.5/10 life in an apartment with a knowledgeable and prepared owner, than be euthanized or stay in the system for longer than necessary because they couldn’t get a 10/10 life with a big backyard. I ended up going with a Fetch rescue instead and would recommend the same to others.

We got a wonderful dog through Underdog Pet Rescue in November of 2020. Then, my parents adopted a cat in January of 2021. They're careful to make sure their animals go to a good home. We love our dog!! Update: I now foster dogs through Underdog! They're a wonderful rescue and vet clinic. I was well trained and supported to help foster dogs. It's so rewarding seeing amazing dogs find a forever home.

We adopted two beautiful, adorable kittens named Oliver and June from here. The adoption process went very fast and smoothly. Their foster mom, Bridget, was very sweet and receptive to answering any questions we had; we could really see that these two kittens were well cared for by both Bridget and the organization. Highly recommend.
