How to Save Money at Sondel Family Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I honestly couldn’t imagine our family pets being cared for anywhere else. Sondel has seen us through some heavy health issues with our two senior cavalier King Charles spaniels. The front desk staff and techs at the East location have my heart. They are so compassionate and kind to my babies and my husband and me. We’ve used both locations so I cannot forget to shout out Dr. Frankenthal, Dr. Mahoney, and Dr. Sondel - but Dr. Mortenson and Dr. Wallisch have been our angels. You sometimes have to ask yourself how you get so lucky in this lifetime to have two amazing dogs but also the dream team to take care of them. We’ve been with Sondel for 8 years and gah… what a privilege and a blessing. We are “frequent flyers” and in every few weeks or so and in 8 years we’ve never had anything but the best care. Thank you.

Literally the best vet ever! I drive an hour just to come here for my pets. They are so sweet and so good with my cats! They aren’t just all about money and actually help you over the phone when you have questions. They truly care about their patients. I have vets in my area but love these vets so much that I will drive an hour just to go.

We love Sondel! Have had two surgeries performed there that went exceptionally well. They treat each patient like they are their own pet. Waiting area is comfortable and clean and no fear/stress smell that sometime occurs at the vet office. Dr. Mohney is the best!!!

I can’t fully explain how much I love this place, but I’ll try. We switched to sondel a couple years ago due to our previous vet making some questionable decisions and misdiagnosing something. I am so glad we switched. The care and attention we get from the veterinarians here is top notch. Dr. Wallisch and Dr. Mortensen clearly care about me and more importantly, my beloved pets. They take so much time to help me, they answer all of my numerous calls and emails, and they always know how to help in the end. My pets are very old and I love them dearly, the help I’ve received is beyond what I’d ever expect and can’t thank them enough for everything. I truly believe that if you are looking for a vet that you should join Sondel, they will take care of you and your pets! I should also mention that their prices are incredibly reasonable, I definitely think I get far more than I pay for.

I wish I could review this place 20 times! This office has been so good to my pets and incredibly knowledgeable on the English Bulldog breed. I have two cats and two English Bulldogs. We have had multiple routine and emergency visits and they always are able to get us in, even the day before a long 4th of July weekend for swelling. Dr. Sondel is great, and I love to see him love my pets. It’s so sincere and really cute. I’ve seen almost all the other doctors now and walk away impressed w their knowledge and so thankful they’re my clinic. I was at a small town vet before, and while they were a nice family establishment, they didn’t have the knowledge for our dog’s breed. Even with my cat, Dr. Sondel recognized a serious eye condition that required urgent care that the prior vet had missed and was “nothing to worry about”. It cost a bit more than the prior vet, but I still think really affordable. Even emergency visits have always cost less than I think they were going to. Great clinic, great staff. Even the customers are nice and always let me pet their dogs. I just can’t say enough good things.
