How to Save Money at VCA Olympic Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If I could give zero stars, I would. This place is definitely for the status conscious pet "haute couturists". Something which we are not - we like to adopt our dogs from kennels and go straight for the mixed breeds that nobody wants. Our current dog came to us at two years old and very abused. He is mostly a lover now but occasionally gets apprehensive. Trying to make a repeat appointment for shots, I was just told that they could not give us such because they could not board him- which I did not ask for?? They accused our dog of being aggressive, which is a rather ridiculous statement of incompetence because he has seen quite a few different vets in Germany and the US who all actually knew how to handle a scared dog . All of these vets managed to establish rapport and take off the muzzle after a short sniff. Plus, sitting next door during his prior treatment here, I would have heard any major growl, bark, or acting up from our dog etc. I know my dog after all. All this came rather surprisingly because they did charge +$ 750 for one visit due to diarrhea. While we do not mind spending money on our pet, we do expect complimentary standard of veterinary service, to include knowledge of how to approach a muzzled mutt and maybe some judgement-free friendliness towards their owners. Therefore, if you seek a fancy office with an upper crust flair and price tag, this is the place for you. If you are looking for knowledgeable and caring dog treatment stay away.

I am beyond pleased. I was very nervous about my dog and his behaviors at times. They were so understanding, quick and compassionate.

Today I took HiLo, dog, into VCA in Poulsbo for the pre neuter appointment. Horrible experience on 2 fronts. VCA showed no compassion or interest for the calm, patient dog who walked in without an appointment. The man says his dog is bleeding will VCA look at him? The man was told to go to an emergency vet clinic. VCA only saw scheduled appointments. VCA refused to even look at the dog or ask why it was bleeding. When I called and made the initial appointment, VCA assured me I could go into the exam room with my dogs and not wait out in the car or stay behind in the waiting room. This was the only reason I was switching vets. I wanted to be in the room during my dogs' exams to talk directly to the vet. VCA lied. Upon arrival I was allowed to go with my dog into the weighing room. But not allowed into the examination room. Bold face lying. VCA apparently expected to keep my deposit and charge an additional $750 once they tricked me to coming into their office. Wrong. Give me back my deposit, dust off my shoes when I walked out the door. This place is not to be trusted. They care about easy money not the welfare of hurt animals. Do not trust what they tell you over the phone.

Although we have only been taking our pup here for 3 months, the quality of service we have received here is amazing to say the least. We have taken our mini dachshund here for all of his shots and check-ups, and just recently, we had a scare. I called every single emergency hospital in the area and none of them could take him. I called VCA as soon as they opened and even though they didn’t have any appointments available for over a week, they still took the time to call us back and have us drop our pup off to at least take a look when they got the chance. They were prompt with phone call updates, and made us feel like our boy was in the best care. Dr Dammeyer and Dr Ryan and their staff has all the love from us and Beans 🥰

I called this morning and explained that I'd been there multiple times before and that my dog was exhibiting a problem that might indicate internal bleeding from my brief internet search. I was simply told their next available appointment was next week. When I asked if the situation could wait a week I was told that if I thought it was urgent I should take him to an urgent care hospital. I would have preferred at least a hint of empathy or 'let me ask someone if this should be considered a serious matter'. Or even 'I'm sorry we don't have anything sooner.' Without attempting to sound sarcastic, it felt like I was speaking to someone at an auto repair shop.
