How to Save Money at VCA Central Kitsap Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I moved to Washington about 2 months ago. I brought my dog with me because he’s my family, but one morning I saw that his eyes were droopy and he had green stuff coming out and he just look miserable. This very unusual for him and I was very concerned and was worried and was a hot mess. Like any normal dog mom would do is call a vet, well since I’m new to the state. Every vet near me plus some in different towns were ALL full and couldn’t take him. You know living in a small town where that never happens and then moving to here, where you have to wait for hours or they can’t take you because there full is very SCARY AND STRESSFUL. But long story sort this place, VCA Central Kitsap Animal Hospital was available and could take my dog. I’m very grateful they helped my dog Bear and let me know he’s okay and it was just allergies. (FYI my dog has never had allergies before). Thank you guys!

I have used VCA for 6 years now and they have always been fantastic. My primary care vet is amazing, and I have had excellent experiences with 2 of their ER doctors. They always put the animal first and have gone above and beyond to make sure everything is done right. I raise AKC Australian Shepherds so I have several dogs, not to mention a few cats. The staff has seen all my animals and have always been on top of every situation, and if they made a mistake, they rectified it immediately. The staff know me by name, and most of my dogs too. Dr. Purbaugh is quick to ask me about my 16 year old Min Pin everytime she sees me, just because he is old and has several health issues. The staff as a whole, from receptionists, techs, vets and managers have always been nothing but kind and compassionate. They are not the cheapest in the county, but I feel it's worth it to have a great vet who knows you and your animals. Pets are expensive and the clinic doesn't run on hopes and dreams so be prepared to pay for any services you need for your pet. Insinuating they are out for money causes damage to everyone involved. The compassion and care my animal receives is bigger than any bill. So, thank you to Dr. Purbaugh, Dr. Gould, Rae, Cindy, Kiara and the whole staff. You guys are awesome.

We had to take our dog Birdie into their emergency clinic last night. While these situations are never fun, it was the best experience possible given the situation. Stephanie at the front desk, the tech, and the vet were all insanely nice, thorough, communicated well, and helped when we asked questions. We really appreciate the people who work here.

I generally don't like posting negative reviews because there is enough negativity in the world, but this one hits me where it hurts. About a week and a half ago my wife and I took our 17 year old cat in for an emergency, long story short something sudden happened and our cat had died. I'm not knocking the staff's service or their sensitivity to our beloved pet's departure. Today we picked up our cat's remains where they had what seemed like a very well thought out care package with our cat's ashes. Again, when it comes to their actual care of our cat they were professional and did what they could which in this case was nothing, it was our cat's time to go. I am in no way trying to invalidate the work they do nor am I trying to downplay how tough it is to run an emergency vet clinic where this situation probably is a frequent occurrence. That being said, one would think that if you're going to take the time to write a personal message, you'd get our name at least right. I'd also would like to state that not all grieving pet owners would want some of their pet's fur sheared off. I think some understanding on these sort of circumstances would go a long way. UPDATE: Rae contacted me to address my concerns. While this experience his far from ideal I found the apology satisfactory.

It’s taken me a while to post but I was not happy with the wait time ! 11 hours and they where not busy or with the bedside manners of my vet! She said something to the effect of “this is not a life to live in the next 6 years” The doctor assuming her lifespan was not compassionate. My dog is 3 and she did not give me clear diagnosis and running all test possible cost $1500! Some of the staff was very nice just not what I expected from such high recommendations.
