How to Save Money at Mid-Columbia Pet Emergency Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had an unfortunate situation with my two corgis who were not able to keep food in or down for the last several days (yes, we tried everything to self resolve). I had previously called Horse Heaven and was told the wait was 40 deep, I’d likely not be seen. While a bummer, I’ve used Mid Columbia in the past and called. They informed me directly that they were at capacity and only seeing critical cases. After triage we agreed this was a critical case (concerns about dehydration) due to the severity and length of time it had been happening. I was informed up front to expect an unbounded wait time. My pets were sick; waiting isn’t an issue. Check in - easy, quick. Triage - met with empathy for my concerns which may not have felt like an emergency, but it clearly was. Wait - it took me 3 hours before seeing the nurse and doctor. Was I upset? No. I knew the wait would be long. Were other patients seen before us? Yes. Am I ok with that? Yes. I saw a lifeless puppy die of parvo, an older pup who’s time had come to cross the rainbow bridge, a woman rush in her dog that had been attacked by another, saw a sweet frenchie with severe face swelling. This is an ER folks, as with all ERs, the most life threatening (which is not the same as critical care needed) will be seen. If my pet had been in that situation I would beg for the same treatment. I also waited 3 hours so I saw all of the above in a very short time frame. They had several violent situations happen at once; they helped each one. They handled each with kindness and empathy all while we hung out and waited our turn - wishing the best for the direness experienced. Visit - it took about 4 hours for the work ups and testing required. We worked together to have a balanced plan to help get them both back on track. The doctor was thorough, kind and offered several treatment options that considered the needs of the dogs and budget (transparently we don’t have one when it comes to these two, but they didn’t know that so they offered a range of effective treatments). We left with the right medications, and feeling way more at ease that we were equipped to help them recover. All in all - 7 hours. Worth every hour to make these two feel better. We greatly appreciate the service that doesn’t have to be offered, but is, and each staff member from front of house to back of house.

We had the our puppies first injury happen last night and I was so stressed because we didn’t have an emergency vet closer than 60 miles. These guys took AMAZING care of our puppy and I am so thankful they were there. I wish I could remember the receptionists name, but she was so friendly and just made us so comfortable during this stressful and anxious night. Thank you guys so much. Don’t take it personally, but I do hope we don’t have to come back. 😜

I literally never write reviews but i Just called for an opinion on taking my cat in today(sunday) or waiting till my vet opens tomorrow as my cat looks very unwell and not himself but the lady who answered my call was very rude about it and She had an a horrible attitude when i asked about bringIng him in and let me know that only critical patients were being taken in. She only asked if he was urinating and when i said yes Thats when she said he should fine till tomorrow and hung up the phone. It was very unprofessional and rude, as someone who works with people alll the time i would never speak to anyone like that.

Please don't let the negative reviews define this amazing place. This place is the only emergency vet that stays open 24hrs in the region and is referred by most central cities in washington. Most vets are short staffed and doing their best to help you. So please be kind and keep that in mind when you are asked to wait. Your fur baby isn't the only one that is seeking medical attention. I've been here twice for my previous dog and my new puppy, which they were willing to see at such short notice. I didn't mind the wait as this was the only place that was even willing to take us in. The costs at emergency vets are understandably more expensive than local vets but that's the whole reason you take your pet to this place, because it's an emergency. Be kind to these people, they are only trying to help.

Our poor pup found and ate some marijuana ash on her evening walk. We had no idea what was wrong with her until our (out-of-town) vet daughter suggested drug toxicity. We were shocked that even a small amount of ash can completely intoxicate a 15 lb dog. The care we got at this emergency clinic was kind, thorough, and timely. We are grateful that the Tri-Cities has this facility for after hours because our regular vet could not work her in. After hydration and some activated charcoal, she came home and slept off her high. Poor pup! We will be extra vigilant on night walks from now on!
