How to Save Money at Rutland Veterinary Clinic & Surgical Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Came here for a second opinion and what an amazing place this establishment is! Communication on point along with efficiency of my appointment. But most importantly the extra thoughtful care for my dog Tia, that Dr Macpherson showed really won my loyalty. It was a privilege to be seen by such quality people. Roscoe

They take great care of your pets! They are highly professional, very nice, and I would trust them completely for pretty much anything. They are quite pricey and there have been 2 instances where we needed emergency surgery and we were referred to other clinics, which ended up being fine but did add some logistical complications. Plus they were pretty crazy with the masks well after Covid was a non-issue, even more so than in Burlington, which was surprising and mildly annoying. But overall, a great place to bring your pets

The vet that saw Tanner (Dr. Macpherson) was very thorough and willing to answer all my questions. I was very worried but he gave me peace of mind. He is also getting another opinion about Tanners eye injury. We were there for a different issue (serious diarrhea) however he also took time to check out his eye. Tanner was very comfortable with the staff and the Vet and I believe it's because of how calm they are with animals. The office is very clean as well. Every time I would bring Tanner to his previous vet he would end up with diarrhea within a couple days. It could be coincidence but I believe it's because the rooms aren't cleaned after each animal is seen. I ended up taking Tanner to Rutland Veteriany Clinic & Surgical Center because his vet wanted me to wait 4 days to bring him in when he had bloody diarrhea and I couldn't make him wait 4 days, especially during Christmas. I had just spent several hundred at that vet just a couple days prior and they wouldn't see us even when I begged them. Rutland Vet fit us in within a couple of hours. The receptionist I spoke to was very pleasant and respectful unlike what I've experienced at the other vet office. I was in tears and she helped calm me down. I believe her name was Aila (probably didn't spell it right). It's never pleasant when one of our fur babies is sick but this office truly helped me feel better and most importantly Tanner is feeling better than he was. He could still be better but we aren't racing down 3 flights of stairs multiple times during the night now and he still has more days of antibiotics so I'm sure he will be completely better by the end of his treatment! Tanner will be seeing this vet from now on!! I'm willing to pay the little more for the better care they offer.

We were visiting Okemo and our dog hurt her paw. We called all around and Rutland Animal Clinic was the only one that got us in the same day. Both the staff and vet were extremely helpful and were very experienced at handling our German Shepherd. You could tell they love animals and this is not just a job. The Vet (unfortunately we didn’t get her name. She’s lived in NJ before) asked lots of questions (looked at out dog’s chart from her regular vet), listened intently to her medical history b4 prescribing any meds. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We Highly recommend the clinic.

We recently had to put our beloved dog down and our regular vet was unavailable to help us. Dr. Tess and her assistant Brittany were wonderful. They were very gentle, calm, compassionate, and empathetic. It made the worst experience bearable. Thank you.
