How to Save Money at Piedmont Equine Practice

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We are so very grateful for Dr. Kylie and Dr Sara and the Piedmont Equine Team! They were very responsive, kind, attentive and supportive during some very difficult times when our donkeys were very sick and had to be put down. I would highly recommend them!!

Dr. Ahster and her assistant were very caring with my horse and checked her out thoroughly. Unfortunate, my horse was sick and had to be put down. I am very grateful for the job and the compassion these two ladies had. Thank you.🐴

My daughter and her horse Cricket compete in eventing. Her horse has had her share of injuries as would any high-level athlete. But one situation is important. After a day of cross country schooling, Cricket went lame on her left fetlock. Dr. Bowman of Piedmont equine showed up the next day and gave us a choice of an aggressive treatment plan or one non-aggressive (shots vs. oral antibiotics). After explaining the risks, I chose aggressive since we’ve done 8 previous joint injections without issue – coupled with the fact that my daughter was preparing for the American Eventing Championships 8 weeks later. Two days after the injection, it was clear that something was wrong. We rushed Cricket to Piedmont for analysis. The doctors there determined that she had developed an infection in her fetlock, needed two weeks of hospital care, and would be out for 2-3 months. As soon as my daughter did the math and the tears started, I nearly lost it. Everything that they had worked for was lost due to an injection. It wasn’t until a few days later that we both calmed down. The real reason for my 5 stars for Piedmont is what Dr Bowman did. Feeling terrible about the outcome of the situation, Dr. Bowman came out almost every other day to check on Cricket and due to his care, concern and expert analysis, Cricket was able to recover in 4 weeks, resume work, and got back to where she was prior to the injury with time to spare. My daughter and Cricket were able to compete at AECs and 1 month later, place 2nd at the USEA Area 2 Regionals. None of this would have been possible without the care and concern of Dr Davis and the staff at Piedmont Equine. With all the varied types of injuries that can happen to a horse, we will still call Dr. Bowman and Piedmont equine first whenever anything happens to my daughter’s pride and joy.

This review is for the new portion of this practice, The Small Animal Clinic at Piedmont Equine. This is the most wonderful veterinary clinic. They saved my cats life. Their staff went above and beyond to ensure he was well after his discharge. I cannot thank this clinic enough. Their thoroughness, wonderful care, attention to every detail was far superior to any vet clinic I have ever dealt with. Thanks to them my cat can enjoy his life for many years to come. It was a very complicated case involving surgery and weeks of care. Their prices are more than fair and I felt my animal received 5 star treatment. Thank you! Thank you!

I have had Dr Davis out for various vettings as well as to work on my mothers horses. He is always very knowledgeable and professional. He is a wonderful rider as well and I think that is helpful in seeing and analyzing the gaits. We most highly recommend the practice. They see a lot of horses and are up to date on current treatment strategies. Wonderful practice, with very helpful kind office and barn staff as well.
