How to Save Money at Brandt Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Switching to Brandt from my previous vet of over 10 years and so glad I did! Dr Natalie Bale is outstanding! Will continue to use this practice for all 12 of my dogs!

Brandt Veterinary Services always tries to accommodate pet needs and addresses follow- up concerns/ questions. Everyone shows care and understanding when discussing beloved pets. Have been taking my animals here for 20+ years, previously called and owned by Dr. Bill. Seamless transition as Dr. Bill continued to serve until recent retirement. Because this place is so popular, it needs more vets!

I’m new to the area and was looking for a vet for my puppy. After reading reviews, asking on the Nextdoor app, calling around, experiencing customer service (or the lack of it) I finally settled on Brandt Vet and I’m so glad I did. Dr. Kate is kind and knowledgeable. She listened and really cared about my pup, explaining things and calling me for updates. Every person I’ve spoken to has been friendly and patient - Brittany and Jessica were both hugely helpful getting appointments set up , checking in with Dr Kate and getting back to me, helping with paperwork etc and explaining costs up front without getting annoyed about it. I also had to leave my pup there for a day and they took such great care of him. When I picked him up so many staff members came out to chat to me and comment on how sweet he is. I absolutely recommend them for anyone looking.

This Vet is the BEST! TEN STARS! We have been taking our adopted dog here for almost 3 years, (after a bad experience at another Midlothian Vet). Originally Dr. Bill's Pet Infirmary and now it's named Brandt's Veterinary Services. During the transition, they didn't miss a beat. The employees are kind, wicked efficient, loving towards our dog and truly care about the pets they take care of. They are also super responsive via email, on the phone and always try to fit us in on short notice, if we have an issue. Also, (and this is the best part), if your dog has been seen recently and is up to date on all their vaccinations, they will renew the prescriptions that you need, without having to bring them in. That makes me happy, because taking Gunther to the Vet, stresses me out more than my dog!

I had been going here since Dr.Bill owned the practice. My dog used to love going the vet and he was loved by Dr.Bill and all the staff. My dog is an 80-85lb pibull and he is the most calm and tolerant dog, Dr.Bills staff used to play with his tail, his whiskers, his ears, and gave him plenty of hugs/kisses. The first time I took my dog to BVS they took him into the back (which has never happened before), next thing I know the door opens and my dog comes running in with a muzzle and a Vet Assistant tackles him to the ground. I really wish I was joking. The vet came in and said that he was being very aggressive, had tried to bite them, and was growling at them in the back. I asked them multiple times to remove the muzzle, because he was clawing at his face trying to get it off and was trying to squirm out from under the assistant. The vet and the assistant refused to and said that they were almost done and that if he would stay still that they could finish faster. When we left he had scratches around his eyes from him trying to remove the muzzle. I should’ve never went back, but I had to much going on personally. I went back 3 more times with him and every time they would look at me as if I were crazy for saying no to muzzling him. I once argued with the assistant for a few minutes to not put a muzzle on him. Apparently on his chart he was permanently flagged for being aggressive. The last straw for me was recently I made an appointment and informed them that I was unable to pay the full amount upfront, they said it wouldn't be a problem and that I had to inform the staff when checking out. After that days appointment, when I was in the process of paying, I had an old lady yell at me because my dog was “too close” (she had approached me and decided to stand 3in away from me) and nobody said anything. Then after I informed the vet assistant that I was unable to pay in full that day, she rudely said I needed to call ahead next time. I tried, for the first time, to pay online for the appointment and I received a “thank you for your payment” email, I then called them to pay the rest of the amount and to double check that the payment went through. They informed me that the online payment declined and that I’ll receive an email “in the future” stating that my payment was declined. I called my bank and they stated they declined the transaction because the website was flagged for suspicious activity. It’s been a week and I never received an email informing me my payment was declined (I even checked my spam folder), I don’t think I’ll ever receive that email. I’m never going there again, 3 bad experiences when I’ve never had 1 bad experience with Dr.Bill.
