How to Save Money at Brandermill Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Emily and staff were excellent with our 8 week old puppy. He was not scared whatsoever and actually enjoyed his visit. All of our questions were addressed. The office was nice, as well. Will be using this practice from now on.

For 30 years, Brandermill Animal Hospital has been my exclusive veterinary provider. As I stated previously, each visit is a cheerful event, especially for Spot. He relaxes upon arrival, and we both enjoy the amazing attention he receives. Spot is treated like a VIP. Dr. Kistler and her crew are nothing less than wonderful.

I just loved Dr. G and her assistant (sorry I didn’t get her name)! They got right down with Shelby on the floor and just made her feel so comfortable. They answered all my questions, made plans for upcoming testing, got a price sheet, and made the whole visit so easy! So professional but very friendly. I can’t say enough good about our visit. Shelby had a small amount of anxiety after the visit but nothing like normal and I think that’s due to being on the floor and not forced to get on a cold table. Thank you so much for taking such good care of my girl!

Brandermill Vet was recommended to me by a co-worker and the experience has been great, my Simba is very comfortable with the staff. And to me that's what matters the most, my fur baby being at ease.

I do not recommend this hospital due to the behavior of their staff and the privileged responses that I was given. They accused my husband of hearing things and took the side of the staff when a staff member hung up the phone on my husband. I was right by my husband when the call happened and she most definitely hung up on him without even saying goodbye or the price of the reassessment. When I brought up several issues with the customer service team, they also took their side. They did not even apologize for the hangup. The lady in charge of the front desk ( they do not have an office manager) came on the line and brought up her tenure of 7 years. I never brought up anything about tenure; nor did I care. Later on in the conversation, I did bring up my 15 years of customer service experience of which she gaslighted and said well she has been in the business for over 20 years. The medical doctor then came on the line and stated that her staff was so upset by the conversation. ( I was speaking the truth of their entitled behavior) They then repeated that my husband was told about the x-rays when he was not asked and the summary of the visit does not show it as well. I am so disappointed with this hospital and the way they treat folks of color. They also got offended when I brought it up. I am a woman who respects others and expects the same back. I will be sharing my experience with others so that they find another place to go. They do not have any folks of color on their staff. They spoke to me as if I was beneath them and that their staff is always right. Lastly, she suggested that I take our guinea pig instead of my husband because of all the confusion. I then decided it was best to part ways and go somewhere that believes in treating their customers with respect and who has a diverse staff who do not act as if they are above someone based on their tenure. A BBB will also be filed.
