How to Save Money at Short Pump Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been searching for a vet since I moved to Richmond and I am so happy to have found Short Pump animal hospital!! The front staff is super friendly, quick to answer any emails, and they make you feel right at home! As for the technicians and veterinarians I can only speak to my doctor and their vet tech but out of all the vets I’ve been to for various pets both personal and friends I have never experienced a more kind, gentle, and caring team. The technicians are great and so sweet to your furry friend and the vet blew me out of the water. She answered all my questions and concerns, explained all the possibilities for causes, and then gave me SEVERAL ways that we could go about finding a solution. This made is so easy to choose what I felt was best without having to explain any personal reasons or feel pressured into an expensive add on/option. I appreciate the amount of information and details about behaviors and possible solutions to behaviors and what causes them! It made me feel like I left with not only a lot of my plate of worry but also equipped with some knowledge for the future! Highly recommend to anyone looking for care for their furry friend

The very best vets office I have ever dealt with. The skill and compassion are incredible. Due to a cancellation they were able to get me in almost immediately with a very difficult rescue situation and could not have been more caring or expert in what they did to help. The entire staff is outstanding. Everyone. If you're searching for a place to care for your animals you can stop - look no farther than Short Pump Animal Hospital.

I want to sit down and write a very much long time needed review. I cannot speak highly enough about Short Pump Animal Hopsital. Dr. Morlino and her staff are wonderful vets. When I moved here in 2019, she assisted me with my first dog. She went above and beyond the call of duty to research how to help my dog's medical condition both naturally and with medical interventions. The staff were very supportive and sent kind words when she crossed the rainbow bridge. Dr. Wiggley took care of my father's dog when I babysat him for a month and he got sick. I have gotten to know all the vets at some point because I wanted to make sure all staff were up to date and kind. They are! Everyone consults with each other and works together as a team, though adding in their own unique vet experience. My second fur baby was only with me a short nine months, but Dr. Morlino again went above and beyond the call of duty to help me help him. Both my dogs were unique complex cases. I am so appreciative to have such a good medical team. I look forward to entrusting Short Pump Animal Hospital with future vet care for future fur babies. The front desk staff is nice and responsie. People get back to your emails and phone calls. They are accomodating for people with disabilites, understand how to work with service dogs, listen to instructions left on how to handle a dog, and communicate with any outside professionals. I can't say enough about this place. It is clean, professional, and appointments are fairly quick (of course depending your needs). They do a good job with surgeries and follow up care. Vets are open minded and really love the dogs.

I brought my very sick cat in here last week as a walk-in after his health severely declined and we were concerned that our appointment time with them was too far away. When we arrived and explained the situation, all of the staff immediately jumped into action to help us out. We had 3 different people come out to the car to update us in the span of 10 minutes, incredibly responsive compared to past emergency vets we have gone to. They confirmed the price of the procedures needed with us before moving forward. Unfortunately, my kitty did not survive his medical problems but they showed us kindness, empathy, and gave us time and and a private space to grieve our baby. They did not rush us away and gave us additional ideas on what we could do to preserve his memory, like taking favorite pieces of fur to keep. We opted to have our baby cremated, and the next day when I was in tears realizing that I did not collect enough fur from specific parts of his coat, I called them and the person on the phone said they would contact the company handling the cremation to see if it was still possible to collect more fur. They even called back to confirm with me that it could be done, which soothed a lot of my worries. My kitty’s remains arrived back in under a week inside of a beautiful, sealed off box that included his name and a space for a photograph. They provided us with the clay print, warning us to not set anything on top of it as it was still wet, and also included detailed instructions on how to bake the print. It’s unfortunate that this was the outcome of our situation, but we feel like the people working here genuinely did everything they could do to save our baby and we could not have asked for more from them in terms of how much kindness they extended to us. I hope I never have to come back again, but I know if I ever need an emergency vet in the future, this place will be my first choice. Thank you for providing as much help and peace as you could for us under the circumstances. We will miss our baby boy dearly but we appreciate everyone here who helped make this experience a little less painful.
