How to Save Money at Holistic Veterinary Consultants

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Lewter gave our sweet Perry the best last month of his life. My 12.5 year old rescue dog had been showing signs of trouble walking and limping in his back legs, and our previous vet said it was arthritis. We started a round of medicine, and it got better for a few days, but shortly after got even worse than before medication. They prescribed a secondary medicine that he reacted poorly to. I called that vet numerous times to explain new small symptoms I felt may indicate more, and they gave me the same answer each time. I knew something else was going on, so I called Holistic Veterinary Consultants, and Dr Lewter actually answered. She spent nearly an hour just talking to me, listening, suggesting a few things and genuinely wanting to learn more. She suggested I book an appointment but wasn’t pushy. It was a genuinely caring gesture. I ended up booking just in time for our sweet boy - he started getting weaker. We started with our consultation in person that went far beyond the set time due to my questions, but she answered all of them. We tried laser therapy, Bemer, and acupuncture. He was more comfortable and less tense the next day. We ended up taking off his meds, and he seemed better. We went back the next week, and we discussed what other causes my be impacting his mobility, and those options were all new ones - none the other doctor had explored. We talked about treatment, next steps, and again - no pressure to do more. She noticed his tongue was pale and gave us medicine that would help with that. At our third visit, we ran bloodwork that started revealing another thing - he was very anemic - eventually we discovered it was cancer. Dr. Lewter never said that word so we wouldn’t worry, and she needed to investigate more herself, and eventually suggested an ultrasound that unveiled the extent of his illness. She worked after hours to coordinate the ultrasound to be performed as soon as possible to ensure we got to the bottom of it. We had another two and a half great weeks with our boy and did all the great things we could with him with the time we were lucky to spend with him, and her team was there to answer any questions I had. She even came to our home to help him be at peace outside in the sun surrounded by familiar things to make it as smooth, peaceful, and loving as possible. I truly couldn’t have asked for a better last day with him. From the soothing words, kind understanding, flexibility, and even the thoughtful daffodils (she didn’t know at the time, but I had planted some in a planter with Perry a few weeks back so I could always remember that time together when they bloomed). Thank you, Dr.Lewter and team! We couldn’t recommend you enough - Maria, Norm & Perry

I was there two weeks ago to get my new puppy started on his shots. After the visit they gave me a little gift bag with four sample size bags of dog food. Wonderful dog food I will be purchasing some for my dog 🐕

Dr. Lewter is a great vet. She's so experienced and draws on a wide range of knowledge from both eastern and western medicine to treat animals. Her office is very calm and it takes a while for my pets to realize they are at the vet! She spends a lot of time with you and your pet. I only wish I could find a human doctor like her. My pets get way better medical care than I do!

1/12/21 around 1 PM. I called this doctor and was asking what the cost would be as I live on a fixed income. The receptionist informed me that there was a $50 non-refundable deposit to be payed prior to the appointment, which would be used towards cost of visit...but if the visit was cancelled this was non-refundable. This is robbery and I believe illegal. My dog needs medical help for his shoulder not a crook for my wallet. I don't recommend this business for your pet if you love them. This shows they're strictly concerned about MONEY 💰💰🤑🤑 How much goes in the doctors pocket.

I bring both of my cats here, Dobby and Harry, Dobby gets acupuncture and falls asleep while Dr. Lewter does it. He loves Dr. Lewter and the rest of the staff and gets excited when I pull up to the clinic. Everyone here knows what they are doing and is very professional.
