How to Save Money at Caring Hands Animal Hospital - Alexandria

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My experience at this Caring Hands location had been a positive one for more than a year. I had good interactions from everyone there. However when my dog was in really bad condition and on the verge of death, the lack of empathy I experienced from them was like no other. I had an appointment to come in to have my dog examined because he wasn’t eating and I could tell was probably near death. The appointment was during rush hours and I was about 10 minutes late. I spoke with them on the phone to let them know that I was almost there and just needed a couple of minutes. After the receptionist spoke with the doctor I was told that they wouldn’t be able to take Dash because I was 10 minutes late. I pleaded with them on the phone, explaining his dire conditions and said that I would be willing to take a shorter appointment or wait until the doctor sees someone else and they were just like “nope sorry”. I explained that my dog may not make it through the night and they were like oh sorry but we still won’t see him. That lack of compassion and coldness was one of the harshest that I have ever experienced. Seems that this location has forgotten that there are real people facing potentially really difficult situations (dog dying) on the other end of the phone. I was able to get into the Arlington location the next morning because I never want to set foot back in the Alexandria location again after that experience. The doctor at the Arlington location was very caring and yes my dog was near death and had to be euthanized later that week. The doctor at Arlington was very compassionate, but to this day I am triggered when I pass by the Alexandria location and remember that phone call and denial of help during that difficult time. Even as I write this it still hurts me.

Doctors are great and they are great with our pup. Comparatively, they are expensive and the communication from the rest of the staff is poor. Good luck getting a prescription filled from a cost-effective online vendor, they rarely respond without multiple reminders. And if there is an issue they'll never let you know, they just ignore the request.

We saw Dr Neumann for a follow up appointment following an ER visit. Before our visit we felt lost, with no real understanding of what possible could be wrong or what direction to take other than another expensive trip to the ER. But that all changed after our visit. Dr Neumann and the team at Caring Hands were so kind, understanding and gentle with our Mozzie. They went over all the testing and screening they would be doing and reviewed pricing up front. Dr Neumann followed up with results and helped us determine that a cardiologist visit was necessary. And assisted us with recommendations to see a cardiologist directly to hopefully avoid the ER again. We traveled from 45 minutes from western Fairfax County to see Dr Neumann and we are so happy we did. We know our cat is doing well because of our visit. I highly recommend Caring Hands Alexandria and Dr Neumann. Thank you Dr Neumann and Caring Hands!!!!

Dr Doss is absolutely amazing. She was so thorough and caring with our dogs. She even sat on the floor with them initially. We had to wait awhile to be seen but they gave us a private room to wait. Recommend this vet!

Pretty upset by the lack of treatment/diagnosis of my sick kitten. I took her in a few weeks ago as she had a bump on her head for several months now. The first vet said oh it’s probably just part of her skull. I take her in AGAIN as more bumps appear. Now she’s having hair loss and is itching it constantly. Another vet looks at her (very quickly again) and says it’s probably just a skin infection. She orders a very expensive antibiotic injection. That doesn’t work at all. I take her to another vet and within the first visit they were able to determine that it was a fungal injection that required COMPLETELY DIFFERENT medicine. I’m appalled at how incompetent the vets at this clinic are. I will never take my kittens here again.
