How to Save Money at Dixie Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've been a client for years, and today when I called in with a very pressing issue with my dog, (literally had to wait on hold for 30 minutes because the queue was so long) they said they couldn't see her for two weeks. Uhm, two weeks? When my dog NEEDS care as soon as possible? Come on... They do good work there, but their prices are very high compared to other vets. I'll be going elsewhere from now on.

I LOVE Dixie Veterinary!! I just moved to the area and was nervous about finding someone I trust with all my animals. I have taken my dogs and goats to this clinic and they were amazing with them. The techs were so incredibly nice and patient and the doctors are so knowledgeable and friendly!! Thank you Dixie Vet for being so good to us!!

This is a negative review but I want to be as nice as possible and share my point of view. I took my cat here last year and they were good to us. This year I called ahead as I have a second cat now. I told them I needed yearly shots and nail trim for both cats. I asked what the price would be. I was told $40 for one cat and $70 for the second and the reason for the difference was that they had not seen my 2nd cat before and an exam is required. We take our cats in and then get hit with a nearly $240 bill. I told them there was a mistake on the bill, as I already got a quote and she proceeds to tell me that I was mistaken (which I'm not perfect, I know) but then the arrogance turned on and she told me that the pricing she quoted was correct (in part). Yearly shots are $40, exam is $70 but she never told that each shot was $21 (roughly) nail trims are $21 a piece. I told her but when I say, I need yearly shots and a nail trim for two cats and you say a price you can't say, oh will I didn't give you all the pricing. Then she proceeded to say that she knows what she says on the phone in repeating herself multiple times a day and if I really wanted to know the pricing I should have checked their website. Sadly I turned into a "Karen" myself which I felt bad for (and apologized to her) as that is not me, but the arrogance, the misleading on pricing was just too much for me. Plus I see I'm not the first negative review about being told one price and then getting shocked after the work is done of a much higher price. Plus I even gave her the option to prove me wrong (and I still may be) she said they record their phone calls and she would go back and listen to it. I told her I would appreciate that and a call back in 2 days and let me know what she heard (again I could be wrong). However after 2 weeks I have not received a phone call. I can only guess why. Not going here again :(

I thought they were good until they hurried through paperwork with me and made added costs seem like part of the procedure rather than hundreds of extra dollars. Then lied about it, saying they made me fully aware of the costs. Then made a nurse go back and forth between me and the doctor instead of the doctor coming to talk to me about my complaints himself and refusing to face me. I could hear him through the door saying, "tell her this, tell her that." Why not just come tell me yourself? I feel bad for the nurse who was trying to convey her boss's terrible customer service responses while also trying to appease me. She was really stuck between a rock and a hard place. Overall, terrible customer service and unfair treatment. I was stupid enough to trust the person going over the paperwork with me and sign when she prompted, instead of reading the fine print. There were many added costs that she made seem like part of the original procedure cost, and never made me aware of those added costs (she did mention a couple) before hurriedly telling me to "sign here." I'll never make that mistake again. Then she lied to the doctor/nurse and said that she had absolutely gone over those costs with me. No ma'am, you did not. They ended up removing 2 small costs that weren't in the paperwork I signed, but for the others they were going to hold my dog hostage until I paid, despite the unfair service and lying. But that's proof right there that they are trying to add costs that I never agreed to. In this day and age of "Karens", we're not even allowed to have complaints for fear of being labeled. But sometimes the business is truly at fault, and this is definitely one of those times. I blame myself a little too for trusting them without reading the fine print. Again, I will never be making that mistake again. Don't trust them when they go over paperwork. Read everything yourself and make sure you fully understand every cost you're signing for. I ultimately paid for the added costs because I wanted my dog back, and they wouldn't bring him to me until I paid, and the unfair treatment was upsetting enough to me that I just wanted to get out of there. I thanked the nurse who helped me and made sure she knew that I wasn't upset with her. I will probably go back just because it's the closest vet clinic to me, and I don't really feel like establishing care elsewhere. Plus I don't think they do a bad job taking care of the animal. I think they just did a really bad job taking care of their customer.
